C'mon, Fess Up: how many of you have..........?

3. Just cleaned off the saddle space before riding out and not done a proper groom.
Yes, nearly every time I ride. He lives out and I hack.

7. Tied up with the reins
Yes if looping them over fenceposts counts as tying up?

Also..

Mane-trimming - I always use scissors

Tacking-up - I find him in the field, put bridle on, run brush over saddle-area, put saddle on. Then he stands loose while I sort stirrups, open gate, lead him out, lock gate.

Bareback - yes but always with a hat and riding boots

Untacking - I get off in field, he stands loose, saddle off, then bridle off, off he trundles to eat grass.

Rugging/derugging - on rare occasions he's rugged, he's never tied-up, just stands while I do it.

I think it's also how you bring them up, how you are with them, what their type is. Mine are generally steady-eddy cob types whose aim in life is to eat, who live out and get caught once a day to be ridden lightly and fed polos. If they were highly strung, highly fed sports horses I would handle them differently.

OK, so was just discussing Guilty Secrets with a friend.

1. Done the horses in open-toed sandals - in flip flops, yes, just once

2. Led in without joddie boots, gloves, hat (BHS yard requirements!!) - do it every day :)

3. Just cleaned off the saddle space before riding out and not done a proper groom - yup (and those who know me will find this hard to believe

4. Just chucked them out in the field afterwards to get on with rolling etc without a proper wash-down etc - yup, he isn't dead from it yet!

5. Ridden without picking out feet first - do this rather too often, but always pick out feet after a hack and on coming in from the field in case of stones, etc.

6. Not cleaned tack since the last time you rode in the rain - um, no, never . . . always take care of tack

7. Not poo-picked - at all - well, yes, when on yard with enormous fields where the YO rolled and harrowed, but in smaller fields, I HAVE to poo pick - can't bear seeing all that wasted grazing

8. Tied up with the reins - never

9. Used roundings for a pelham instead of two separate reins - nope

9. Ridden in sandals in the summer (OK I DO have safety stirrups with cages!!) - only once, was on a business jolly (one of those team-building nonsenses in Hungary) and got the chance to ride a Lipizzaner stallion - I was in flip flops at the time and they let me ride him barefoot - felt very odd/vulnerable

I ride in a head collar, but always with hat and boots.

I have cut mane with scissors, then neatened with a solo comb. My horse crushes me when I try to pull.

I have given my horse Guinness when we stopped off at a pub out hacking... (Riding under the influence!!)

I have been swimming on my horse.

Once, I really wasn't paying attention whilst picknicking, and my horse managed to steal a Maoam out of the wrapper I was unwrapping... Felt guilty for ages and watched him like a hawk for colic!

I've also led up to six horses at a time before... They were well trained to be led in groups, and they had feed waiting in the stables so it was a point and shoot exercise, but compared to people who won't lead two or three together it looks mad...

1. Done the horses in open-toed sandals - Nope - though have been guilty for being at the yard in Crocs - only the once and I ended up with a possible cracked heel bone so never again lol!

2. Led in without joddie boots, gloves, hat (BHS yard requirements!!) - do it every day - though did use had and gloves for the first month or two with my new mare til we got to know one another, and always with hat and gloves if I'm going for an inhand hack off the yard.

3. Just cleaned off the saddle space before riding out and not done a proper groom - might have, can't remember. I normally do a full body groom, bridle path and ears, but will leave mane and tail muddy.

4. Just chucked them out in the field afterwards to get on with rolling etc without a proper wash-down etc - All the time with my old horse. New mare is prone to sweat rash/rubs so I have to be ultra careful to sponge/shower after every ride.!

5. Ridden without picking out feet first - no. The ponies have to cross an area of loose stone s from field to box, so I wouldn't want anything getting lodged in a foot before riding. Having said that if I'm not riding I don't pick out their (bare) feet.

6. Not cleaned tack since the last time you rode in the rain - I never ride in the rain (hehe ;) ) No, since I bought a leather saddle I do clean it about once a month. Girth and bridle get done more often, but only stripped down and done with a toothbrush/ toothpick once a month.

7. Not poo-picked - at all - My ponies are really neat in the paddock and only poo down one side (never in the middle!) I poo pick the field every other day.

8. Tied up with the reins - never

9. Used roundings for a pelham instead of two separate reins - no

9. Ridden in sandals in the summer - never. If I'm at the yard I have jod or yard boots on. I can't even bring myself to wear the casual trainer type riding boots!

none of the above bar number 2 I honestly cannot remember ever wearing a hat , gloves and joddie boots to lead any horse in 50 years of horse ownership including mares stallions and of course foals. Dont like sandals, am ocd about cleanliness and hate roundings

I was feeling quite smug about this, thinking I'd never been on a horse without proper shoes on, when I remembered that I have ridden in sandals once. I've done everything else on the OP's list except the Pelham thing, and that's only because I don't have a Pelham.

1. Done the horses in open-toed sandals - Well I think I did them in crocs once does that count (although think the crocs in themself are a sin!)

2. Led in without joddie boots, gloves, hat (BHS yard requirements!!) - I never wear a hat and gloves to lead in... come to think of it I very rarely remember to wear my hat when lunging either. BHS would have my head!

3. Just cleaned off the saddle space before riding out and not done a proper groom - Erm yep I've done this... very rarely clean legs properly in winter cos they're never blooming dry and I am a serial mud monster owner so if I'm in a rush sacrifices have to be made! I also do groundwork having only brushed the face!

4. Just chucked them out in the field afterwards to get on with rolling etc without a proper wash-down etc - Have done this occasionally when yard was a long way from field but I do NORMALLY sponge off a sweaty horse at least (don't wait for them to dry or anything before they go out though)

5. Ridden without picking out feet first - Yeah I've done this when I've forgot (oops!)

6. Not cleaned tack since the last time you rode in the rain - Only time my tack is clean is when I'm off to a party!

7. Not poo-picked - at all - I've only ever been on one yard where I've poo picked (& that was only the summer field!)

8. Tied up with the reins - Erm possibly once? I don't make a habit of it though

9. Used roundings for a pelham instead of two separate reins - Yep, on somebody else's horse that had it set up like that (I've never ridden my own in one)

9. Ridden in sandals in the summer - No, not that brave!

Just to add to my sins I have trimmed a mane with scissors (then tidied with solocomb), I don't normally wear a hat to load (I do wear gloved though with current horse cos he goes backwards sometimes... prev pony I didn't bother!), frequently used to lead upto 4 horses together, have shared 1 headcollar and rope between 2 horses in the past (so leadrope over the neck of one and leading the other one from the bottom of the headcollar... to my credit it was normally my own horse I did this to and I used to hold onto the slack rather than loop fingers through noseband!), also used to sometimes lead my old horse by the neck of his rug (once threw my coat over his neck when I had nothing else to lead with!), frequently leave my horse to wander loose in the school whilst I fiddle with poles... yeah I'm naughty!

I've done all of these, although I've not tied up with reins but I've tied up without bailing twine and I've used roundings on a gag, I've never used a Pelham. I've also done most of the extra ones people have added. Rode bareback in a head collar and cliprope back from the field with no hat, always use scissors to cut their manes (and straighteners!) gone round the back of a horse/ under a horse in the lorry.

When I was about 12 me and my friend galloped our ponies on the local football pitch, the ground was lovely! They put a notice in the local shop asking who it was but we never confessed (we also didn't do it again though lol) miracle I'm still alive really :D

All of the above, apart from - Never tied up with reins, always sponge off.

Turned out in flips flops - nail varnish was not set enough for boots to go on! I don't think I know anyone who turns out in hat, boots, gloves.
