Please could somebody recommend a good coat shine, one that doesn't pick up all the dirt. I'm going showing at the weekend and decided last night to get everything ready, but guess what some nice person has helped themselves to my coat shine and mane and tail detangler, so having to go out tomorrow and purchase some

I've tried all sorts and I just cant find anything better than Lincoln Total Groom, its not labelled as a coat shine, but it is, it leaves a lovely gloss, none oily or too slippery and doesn't wear off! and the more you groom with it the more it works.

Bath your neddy about 3 days before a show (so your neddy has time recover his natural oils in his coat with lots of grooming) then groom with above product for the next couple of days leading up to your show (follow instruction on back).....keep you neddy rugged (rug helps to bring up the sheen an of course keep your horse clean) your horse will have beautiful coat, can be used int he mane and tail too. You'll only need to wash mane/tail and legs etc the evening before the show.

Can be used in daily grooming too....just cant beat it for the price..about £7.00!

Alva products are really good. I also like to use supreme sparkle on mane and tail - I have a traditional so it really gets the hair gleaming.

Cheap and cheerful but works a treat is a little pig oil in hot water - apply with a cloth but make sure it is only a dash and plenty of elbow grease. Lot of producers use this for evening performance to really get the gloss.

Having a skewbald that lives out, I have to bath the day before, when finally clean, I spray him with alva dazzle coat conditioner - and then brush and brush and brush until the coat is flat and dry. Next I pop on his dress circle body suit which stays on until I get to the show. This keeps the dust and dirt out and also polishes the coat and keeps it flat.

At the show about an hour or more before the class I apply the alva gleam and first brush with a dandy brush, then a body brush, then a soft goat hair brush. Next I polish with a sheepskin mit and then finish with a micro cloth to get any dust particles. Again just before the class I apply supreme sparkle to the mane, forelock and tail and if not on an arena surface, then a little to the feather.

Sounds a lot of work, but getting the thick coat a traditional has to gleam. especially the white area does take some doing, but at the end he comes up really glossy.

I also feed black sunflower seeds and instant linseed so his coat is glossy to start with.

Actually I got fed up of people pinching mine and now I use Mr Sheen and no one goes near it! I saw Caroline Powels groom using it at an event and thought what a good idea! I don't use it on her coat though, agree with crazymare on that but it works wonders on tails.

As an everyday detangler I use either Canter Coat Shine or Mr Sheen - I live miles from a decent tack shop, so if I run out I have to add it to my list!lol! - As an after bath long lasting detangler and shine it has to be absorbine, if you apply whilst the coat/mane/tail is damp and allow to dry before grooming its amazing stuff and really does work, then at shows I tend to have Mark Todd Competition Silk in my tack box - it smells of coconut and really does feel like silk! When i was a groom for a driving pony pair we used the Alva products and they were amazing, but I can only find them in the Robinsons Catalogue.
I think all in all, if your horse is well groomed and fed to begin with, (I add oil to my girls tea to help with the bloom) then you are half way there. xx

I've just discovered a natural product by a company called forest farmacy - it leaves no residue and works really well! Think it is called natural gleam or something??

Now you cant say that aint shiney...Lavander horse shampoo, its not too harsh or soapy so it doesnt strip the oils out (if you need to bath) and some Lincoln Total Groom....along with elbow greese.
