Coat Supplement for Black Pony?

Can anyone recommend a coat shine supplement for a black coated pony? I had him on the Horse and Pony Direct one last year but they dont make it anymore. He has a Copper and Zinc deficiency so has orange tinges to his coat. He is on a feed balancer but it doesnt seem to make any difference. It has to be low calorie too as he is on a diet.
 
Similar to me, I too have a black pony who's showing tinges in his coat, and I'd like to make sure he has sufficient copper and zinc each day. Currently I feed 1 x scoop of Pro Hoof which gives 175mg of copper a day (which isn't very high I don't think?) and this costs me £1 a day.

Interested to read what replies you get and advice on this. You can buy the individual sacks of copper and zinc but I'm not sure what the suggested dosage is per day? This is a cheaper option.
 
Take a look at equimins advance complete, full spec is on their website. It provides 180mg in a 40g scoop which is a pony level serving plus it has extra copper on a yeast cream. It really is a fab supplement plus if you keep your receipts if your not happy after 2 months they will refund your money. It's linseed based as well so your not paying for cheap fillers
 
There is a product called Black As Knight specifically marketed as a coat enhancer for black horses, although it's mostly paprika, which does trigger a positive drug test if you're actively competing. An oil product might help as well - many people swear by black oil sunflower seeds, although I have to wonder if it's the word "black" in the name that sells it.

Keep him covered over the spring/summer too- a good fly sheet/ uv sheet will help prevent him getting a tan!

The NRC 2007 recommendations for an adult 500kg horse at maintenance/in light work are 100mg copper and 400mg zinc per day.

Pro Hoof at 175mg copper and 525mg zinc is well in excess of that.

I wouldn't recommend messing around with individual minerals without first having a full forage analysis done (and someone experienced in mineral balancing checking the sums!)

What balancer is he on? - if it has iron in it this will probably be blocking the uptake of copper and zinc. You need one without iron as this is more than plentiful enough in UK grazing.
