Daughter and I have been having the same conversation for about two weeks - is our cob a medium or heavy weight - so tonight I am going to measure how much bone she has - slight problem though, wherabouts does one measure and what dimensions constitute a light/mid or heavy weight.

Also someone posted on here a while ago some info as to how much weight a horse could carry (roughly) based on the amount of bone it had - does any one know what it was or what thread it was - thankies in advance

Measure the circumference of the cannon bone under the knee.

As showing cobs go there is only lightweight and heavyweight.
A lightweight should have at least 8" of bone and be able to carry up to 14 stone.
A heavyweight cob should have more than 8" of bone and be able to carry over 14 stone.

But in everyday terms a lightweight is 8" of bone and under, middleweight is 8 to 9" of bone and a heavyweight is over 9" of bone.
My gelding (second in siggy) is a middleweight with 8 3/4".
My mare (first in siggy) is a heavyweight with 10".

I am going to measure my horse tonight. I'd quite like to show him in hunter classes next year so it will help confirm or deny which class to take him in.

Spot on.

My boy has 10inches of bone and is a heavyweight

i believe you are supposed to measure about a centimetre below the knee, just so you are off the joint basically.
