i have been told by my vet to help support my mares legs she needs hind shoes which means i will need to use over reach boots

the problem is i have never used them before
i have only seen them on thoroughbreds and dont really no what the correct fit should look like

she currently has hairy legs for now but the summer they get clipped

does anyone have any pics of there horses wearing over reach boots

and what are the best type and should they be on all the time does it matter if its muddy

Does your horse over reach?
Just the way I'm reading your post the reason for putting them on is because your horse is wearing hind shoes, but this doesn't automatically mean they need to wear over reach boots.

Here is my cob (who’s legs are clipped out) wearing over reach boots. I only use them for riding, especially exciting stuff as he has a dendancy to forge. I can’t remember what make they are but they were just cheapy ones, that Velcro up at the front (oh and they are large).

Not all horses that are shod behind need overreach boots. Genie wears them because she actually overreaches, and wears 'Extra Large' size!

BAD photo but shows the boots!

she does when her welsh side kicks in and gets excited and does her stupid but fancy trot and canter and dont facny finding out whether she pulls them off when i can try and prevent it

yeah i'd wait and see if she actually overreaches before you get some..... my cob does and i just use the cheapy rubber ones (with velcro) in large size..... i did have extra large but they were to big! X

so how will i tell shes over reaching cuts and lost shoes or something else

thankyou for your responces its very helpful as i really dont have a clue

You will either hear it, or you will see by scuffs or cuts. Or she will pull a shoe off etc.

I have to admit..my pony at the mo is not shod (i only got him 6 days ago and he gets shod on monday) but i always tend to ride with over reach boots....especially if you are getting a horse to work hard in the school or out on a hack where they can get a bit excited....it just offers a bit of extra protection. I always put them on my previous arab welsh...he didnt really over reach...only very occasionally but it was a case of "if he is wearing them then he is less likely to cut himself" so i put them on on every ride. They are about £6 for a cheap pair of rubber ones that velcro up the front, you will loose them from time to time....but they are so cheap it doesnt matter!!
My horse/pony is 14.2hh, and is an irish sports horse x cob. He is not really chunky so he wears a medium.
You will soon see when you get to the shop which size you think will fit. Or, most shops will let you buy a couple of pairs and take back the ones that dont fit.

Call me a bit of a worrier but i just think its easier to protect then sort out lost shoes/cuts/etc!

Below is apic of my cob wearing over-reach boots. As others have said you dont necessarily need them but no harm is having them on just in case.

B is clipped out in pic below but always wears a large size - just cheap-ish rubber ones with Velcro.

I always ride my Welsh cob in o/r boots, but that's because she has her heels left long on her front shoes as part of her remedial shoeing.

She has never actually pulled a shoe off and doesn't over-reach - I only use them because my farrier told me to..... :)
