We have a very smart 15.3 cob mare that we've thought about breeding from. The foal would be to keep forever. She's a light weight cob with a huge amount of scope and a wonderful temperament. It's not something we're going to do imminently, as she's relatively young and we want to confirm her soundness before we consider breeding from her. We've thought about Sula Blue? Temperament is number 1on list of priorities & something to make 16hh+. Foal would be eventing so TB/7/8s TB is probably best? Would love to see photos of cob X TBs - especially those out eventing? TIA

Agree with the TB, especially if you're not sure what's in the mix of your mare. Photo of one of my homebreds. Welsh Section D sire, TB mare. Only 15.2hh, jumping DC's at 1.25m.

Kings Composer or Sirens Missile.

No matter how lovely the cob mare is the stallion has to put scope and quality in if the baby is going eventing. I looked at both of these for our cob mare along with another TB, Shining Spirit now sadly deceased. The bloodlines in all three of these stallions is old and proven which is what attracted us.

KC is an old boy now and I don't know if he still stands, but he has got a lot of super horses. Sirens Missile will not throw a chestnut horse. Sula Blue is another very smart stallion.

I would try and stick to as near full TB as possible or possibly something like an Anglo Arab. WB in the mix gives you a risk of throwing too heavy if the wrong genes combine.
Others to look at:
Revolution (full TB) competed Advanced successfully himself. Seen some cracking foals by him at the Futurity evaluations.
Persiflage - anglo arab, advanced eventer. friend of mine has got a very classy foal by him this year out of her young mare.

Have a look at My Eclipse who is by Shaab.

I have bred a couple from him and bought a couple by him - he always seems to pass his super temperament onto his offspring.

He looks lovely - that's the sort of stamp I'd look for! Yes definitely TB.

Thank you AA, Siren's Missile is lovely & would make the short list. Have you any ideas on temperament? A knowledgable friend seemed to think Cruise Missile may have been sharp, but she may be mistaken and even so that wouldn't necessarily impact on SM's temperament but it would be interesting to know from your experience? Sula Blue is definitely still up there for me - his oldest off Spring seems to be doing well out eventing and I like the set up around him.

As well as AA's suggestions look at One More Tiger. Absolute class TB stallion with a temperament to die for which he passes on to his stock and his ability. http://greatbrockhamhurststud.co.uk/our-stallions

Really like the look of OMT - temperament seems apparent in bareback field photos? Would like to see some video of him but cant find any.

Yes I agree - wouldn't risk a WB & I'm more a TB person anyway. Thank you for your suggestions - I'll take a look!

Thank you all for your helpful replies - plenty to keep me occupied and day dreaming!

If he's anything like his sire, Honeybrooke Siren then he should be fine. I tried to use him (HS) twice without any luck; the stud were less than helpful and my mare came back in horrendous condition as did her foal; took ages to get them looking like they should so be warned about that; it was 12 years ago now but it still rankles that a mare which they had been asked to feed, could go downhill so much, her two month foal go off suck and not think to tell me anything at all!

I'm sure if you ask Louise at the stud, she would have video of Tiger. I can certainly vouch for his temperament as he stayed here with me all of one summer and was a delight to handle even when covering. Several mares were on returns to him so I handled their foals too, all lovely souls. My own mare by him (full TB) is so laid back, she's horizontal. She's evented up to BE 100 and has scope to burn; she's only off games this year due to her jockey having dislocated her knee (non- related!)

It won't allow me to edit but just to say, Tiger has only been ridden since Louise bought him so he hasn't done much himself as she only rides him for pleasure, not competitively.

If you search further back on here (probably 3 or four years ago now) there is a thread about a stallion parade at Addington he attended. I'm sure it will have the link to the photographer there.

That isn't strictly true .
Ollie Townend rode him at one grading (not sure who rode him at the other) and wouldn't have just hopped on for the day

True but he has only ever been ridden regularly since he's been with Louise.
By his then owner's own admission, he had very little in the way of prep for the gradings, literally broken and ridden away only, no wonder he was so green at them in spite of OT. Owner at the time was struggling with cancer and in hindsight she kicked herself for taking him so ill prepared; she told me (because I asked) he was never ridden again after that. All quite sad, a waste - but he's now in a great home and much loved by all of the family; he's lucky.
