Cob owners - rugs?

As a newly initiated cob owner, can any one recomend a good brand of rug for cobs. Havent measured the new girl up yet but she is very broad chestested and has a short fat neck so suspect I may have probs.

We will probably need a mid weight turnout, light weight turnout, travel rug and a full necked fleece/cooler for keeping her clean/drying off after bathing (she is grey so suspect we will be doing a lot of the b word).

Also if anyone can reccomend travel boots that are wide without being too long!

Fal Pro really are worth the money especially the Viking but TBH unless you are clipping most manage fine naked or with just a lightweight TO.
 
My big boy wears weatherbeeta and they fit him well. He is a hairy boy, but despite what cbmcts says not all cope naked or just with a lightweight turnout. My boy wears a lightweight turnout all winter but has a medium weight on when it is very wet/stormy/windy/snowy or he drops too much weight. But he NEVER needs a heavyweight.
 
Fals are definitely the best for the big shouldered horse. Expensive but they last forever, even the cheapest version, (the Cheiftain, I think) is good. I've got the Bulldog- middle of the range and it's lasted 4 years - none of his cheap spare rugs have lasted more than 1.
 
i think weatherbeetas are good i have a hw cob and he has HW on without being clipped bacause he really feels the cold
 
I have mostly Mark Todds which come up really well on my Sec D who is quite broad across his chest. They have adjustable fittings on the front which I find helpful.

Definitely Weatherbeeta every time. They seem to be 'made to measure' for my MW 14.3hh in 6 foot. He is short and broad with huge shoulders and bum and these are just the ticket for him.

With regard to travel boots, my boy has got short cob legs, and I find a lot of full sizes are far too long for his little legs. The best ones I have found are Amigo ones which cost around about £27.00. THey are nice and soft and last for ages.
 
Frank has rhinos with the V-neck, its the only one which doesn't pull on his shoulders, could do with a size bigger though as it sits so nicely on his shoulder it pulls the bum forwards! must be more comfortable head down and eating I think.

I would agree with you, however as ours all live out it means we dont have to wait for them dry out before riding.

A lot of people have said that to me but the weatherbeeta freestyle I bought my horse rubbed his shoulders to the point of bleeding in just one day. I don't know if it was a one off, or a wronly sized rug or something. It looked liked it fitted really well but it was awful on him.
 
Well it would seem that weatherbeeta and Fal will be a good starting point. Our old sec C many years ago had weatherbeeta and I always thought they were a good rug for the price. I am going to hang on a bit before I leap into shopping mode in the vain hope that we will be able to shift a bit of weight off her before winter, then again pigs might fly.
 
I have a mark todd lw which is fab! and rhinegold stable and MW turnout, all fit nicely

We have always found Fal Pro great for Murphy who whilst not a cob is fairly broad around the chest/shoulder areas. Annoyingly though I have recently bought a Fal fly rug, in his usual size 6' and it is too small for him, tight around the chest and the wide belly piece won't meet round him

Unfortunately when I tried it on him it got a dirty mark on it so I can't even send it back

Don't over rug a cob.... and as a cob owner and an ex TB owner...I find that istead of loads of different rugs for diffferent weathers you may be better off staying with a light weight rug and adding layers underneath in winter so you can better maintain temperature. ie some winters are mild and like the last one some are hard.

I have my cob in a light turnour rug which does well for autumn and spring and mild witers, if it gets really cold I add a layer under it like a stable rug or a fleece.

When the weather was really cold she was in all three fleece, stable rug and turnout rug,,she was lovelly and snug.

as it warmed up she was in just fleece and turnout rug... then just a turnout rug at night in the spring now nothing except fly rug on sunny days.

This way none of the rugs you buy are ever redundant or used for one season only, the only time all the rugs are not used is summer.

Really cost effective way to rug your cob!!
 
Agree with all the others on Weatherbeeta. Have also had good fit from Shires though so may be worth a try although they seem to be quite hard to get hold of from shops, or at least the full range to have a good look at...WEatherbeeta also pretty good value if your cob is a 'classic' and it ends up being cheaper to throw away at the end of each season rather than mend and wash

I own weatherbeeta an mark tod rugs, my la has big shoulders and they fit him really well. He is clipped out so he wears a H/W but he also feels the cold.

And i have weatherbeeta travel boots for him which fit well.

Sorry to go against the grain, but we found weatherbeeta rubbed badly and really did not last long - about two months!!
Premier Equine and masta re both excellent for large cobby creatures

My cob (15h and takes a 6'6" rug) has abig chest/neck. She is fully clipped all winter and never goes out in anything above mw even in the snow etc. Her oldest rug was a Shires (just deceased after 9 years - it was actually more like 15 as I got it 2nd hand) - have just replaced it with a new lw Shires. Her mw are Kingheads - were on sale at local saddlery and are 7/8 years old and still perfect. Also has a Premier Equine lw which is again about 6/7 years old and still good - and probably the biggest of all of them!!

Montior the temp carefully this first year while you get to know what is normal - my cob can sweat just standing in her stable - only gets stable rug on for the coldest nights - as I said she is fully clipped!!
 
Another vote for Weatherbeeta, and Mark Todd.

Regards travel boots - I use the Polly Products soft travel boots. very much like the old Polypad boots before they redesigned them. Star won't tolerate shaped boots over her hocks.
 
my hw show cob had weatherbeeta as nothing else would close at the front. the mark todds ended up looking like mini skirts and the rambos wouldnt even touch even with the extra breast piece. i had some success with masta fleeces though

My girl is 6'6" & has a mixture of premier equine/amigo and Masta rugs, the PE are my favourite as they are generous fitting Weatherbeeta fit where they touch and rub I found and Mark Todd rugs just look ridiculous on her... Shes a HW 15.2 coblet.
