Cob Q&A

I find that anything with a high level of alfalfa in it will make my mare itchy. Also I think I've heard on here about soya and intolerances, but I'm not 100% sure. Some feed balancers have alfalfa and soya as a protein source so check the ingredients.
It depends what sets your cobs itching off really!
I like Spillers Lite and Lean balancer.

Thankyou @Red-1 mine also struggles with mallanders and I’ve been using equi balancer , micronised linseed and every thing free chaff but wondering if there’s anything I can change after reading that mallanders can be caused from gut issues that effect the liver she’s Definitely mite free also and scab free at the moment but the skin were the mallanders we’re is still a little sore

I do also clip Rigsby's legs every week and wash them at the same time, then use parasite repellent spray. Just done them and no need for any other products all week, and no scabs. Just a normal shampoo as well. Skin isn't sore at all (making clipping easy!).

I use insect shampoo too followed by farriers mite spray ( she’s had dectomax injections) and when it’s not really sunny a neem oil based cream or a really hydrating moisturiser but I feel like if she was in tip top health she wouldn’t get it after reading about it been something to do with the liver and hind gut :( I wish there was a cure for it

If you think it is a lover related issue, I highly recommend talking to Simon at Trinity Consultants. Rigs had a couple of liver/kidney treatments. They smell lovely too.

Just found them on Facebook and messaged them what exactly do they sell as not quite sure from looking on there page but will try anything if she is going to be more comfortable as I always panic about the scabs coming back

Had a sudden memory of reading one of James Herriot's books where an old boy tells him he has the cure for Mallenders and Sallenders. It was marshmallow ointment.
Out of curiosity I just googled it and found this
"The anti-inflammatory effect of marshmallow root may also help relieve skin irritation caused by furunculosis, eczema, and dermatitis. A review from 2013 found that using an ointment containing 20 percent marshmallow root extract reduced skin irritation."

I thought it was interesting.

Linseed sets off two of my feathery ones. Took me a looong time to realise it was a trigger too.

It's in so many balancers annoyingly

Dog spot on for ticks one per leg helpful

@SEL thats interesting do you mean sets them off itching or sends them abit fizzy as she’s been very fizzy but thought it was the grass at moment because of all the crazy weather
