As title, I have a HW Cob with feet to match, he slips quite bad on the roads, he does have road nails in but they are not very effective, does anybody else have this problem or do you have any ideas to help him. He has the farrier on Tuesday so I will also discuss it with him.

Thank you in advance for your help/ideas. :)

Hi, my cob also used to slip quite badly , even with road nails :(
She's been barefoot now for 8 months and hasn't slipped once :)
Not sure what else you can do apart from road nails, hope you manage to work something out, nothing worse than feeling them slip under you! :)

we ride out with horses that are shod, complete with road nails - they slip. We're barefoot and we don't at all. Is it something that would be worth trying for you (although it will take time for the foot to recover from shoeing, and for the frog to develop fully) ?

Have you tried natural balance shoes? My cob used to slip all the time and improved a fair bit in natural balance. Might be worth a try if you don't want to go barefoot, although I must admit my boy is now barefoot and doesn't slip at all. Good luck! :) x

my cob doesn't slip but we have road pins rather than road nails. Nails wear down too quickly. The pins offer more grip so it's worth talking to your farrier about this issue and see if he will put something a little more suitable in place.

My shod horses don't slip on the road any more or less than my bf ones it a question as balance a horse on its forehand will slip more .
Of course all horses can slip occasionally but if he's slipping all the time that's not right.

Thank you for all your replies, I will speak to my farrier and I did think that going barefood could be an option. He does have very good hard feet. How long would it take for him to get used to barefoot? He was not shod when I got him and he had shoes on for around 2.5 years. The hacking where we are is a lot of roads and bridelways. We hack about four times a week anything between 30 mins to 2.5 hours.
