Well I did finally get a horse everyone. For those of you that have been following my posts and saw the various ones that I tried and tested

I have a black gelding cob age 11 and 14.3hh. Unfortunately I didn't get a saddle with him and so bought him a medium fit 9" DtoD continental Gallop saddle as guided by the previous owners.

I can now see that the saddle I got was a quick fix solution and I'm looking to buy him a new saddle that will fit him properly.

I was thinking of getting him a Wintec but I wanted to know, if you have a cob, what saddle have you got and why did you buy that sort, do you have a wintec (which model) and what gullet is it fitted with/do you have several gullets. What is your experience with the Wintec and are they as good as they say?

Looking forward to your views

Good luck with new horse. Tried heaps of saddles and ended up with a Fylde 'Marjorie' show saddle as it was the only make that didn't roll on my girl.

I have 3 cobs, all have Wintec. 2 have Wintec wide and one just the Wintec. I find the interchangeable gullets very useful, you still need to keep a check on the saddle fit. I have had mine 4 years, they are like new, and still fit. I personally think they are great. Good luck. Saddle fitting can be a minefield.

I found the Thorogood Cob range fab and I also had a Fieldhouse leather saddle which was perfect as actually felt as if I was with him not 'on' him!

Why do some saddles have 4 girth straps?

you use the 1st and 3rd or 2nd and 4th

its to get the balance right on rolypolys i think.

I tried the Wintec wide on my cob and it just rolled, however I bought a Thorowgood T4 cob (in a XXW) and it’s perfect, for both of us. It has 4 straps so that it gives a wide girth area, therefore more balance and less roll. Please whatever you get, get it fitted by a professional saddler.

4 straps are normally used on wider horses as they tend to have flatter backs i.e cobs, and it stops so much of the movement and can help hold the saddle more at the front rather than the middle. Some horses also throw you to one side making the saddle move so it helps to compensate. Some saddlers will tell you to do the girth up differently on each side. I know a tbx who had a 4th strap fitted to one side of his saddle to help stop so much movement.

Well granted my cob has shrunk as he is now a medium but he was at least XW before. Before current saddle I never had a problem with getting nice second hand leather saddles from my local saddler to fit him. Never had an issue with them rolling really, just have to be a bit athletic getting on but fine when I am up there.

All of my saddles have been leather (I like leather!) and second hand, I now have a GP and a dr, the dr prob fits him slightly better.

if you are looking for a synthetic imo you can't beat throwgood but if you are wanting a leather one i got a barnsby one last year for my cob and it doesn't slip or anything like most do with cobs being so round

Depending on his shape a bates (momentum etc) might be worth looking at, my cob had a wintec 2000 from when i backed him till this year when he turned 12/13 and he changed shape dramatically and it no longer fitted, but some of the bates are a different shape so fit him now.

Try gettign a master saddler/fitter to bring a few differnt models out for you to try

Hi - I'm a new member, I also have big fat (show) cob and use a barnsby saddle. Tried synthetic but leather much much nicer. Barnsby saddle pure luxury. Get it fitted tho

At medium fit he doesnt sound like hes an overly big chap you dont have to limit yourself to cob saddles. I personalyl dont like synthetic it feels like your sat on the saddle which is sat on the horse. At 9 he isnt going to change shape so much now I would go for leather the ideal range is fantastic as is farrington for the rounder horses, mine for general purpose has the albion vsd in xw but then hes a big un!

Thorowgood. If you want leather, then Kent&Masters or fairfax. Fantastic saddles.
