::rolleyes: Hi can anybody help me out ive got a 4 year old cob who is rather lazy as most are i suppose !!
Im hoping that there is something that will give him some get up and go....
Can anybody advise me of something i can do??
Please please please

You can have mine haha! He's sensitive to the leg so need to squeeze loads!

What is yours being fed?

Well ive just tried him on dry hayledge and that gave him a little get up and go but i dont want him gaining too much weight so was hoping to give him a suppliment? (rocket fuel):D He also has chaff, nuggets, vitmins and carrots on a morning and night.....

I have playing at Parelli for a few years now - you might want to have a wee look,it all comes down to Horsenality & what you need to learn to motivate your horse & it is differs greatly! Left brain horses - sounds like yours- are very clever & don't just do as they are asked because you say so- they want to know what is in for them so let him know & make sure you provide- he will eventually see you as so interesting he won't need to be asked because he will offer - REALLY:D

Is he lazy out hacking or in the school ? How fit is he ? Is he overweight ? I ask because my H/W cob can appear to be a plod if he isn't fit, but this morning I was riding my Hannoverian X TB and friend was riding him. Guess who was the most forward going and most eager to canter ? Hairy Boy himself.

I wouldn't worry at this stage!- at 4 he's just a baby- and it's easier to speed a horse up than trying to slow them down.

As he naturally gets stronger and fitter with age, and builds up he will probably gain more energy.

Diet sounds fine for a 4 yr old!- assume he's not getting too much hay or food as that can slow them down- are nuggets pony cubes?- in which case perfect!

Do not worry- he will get there!

My Little cob is anything but slow!! Okay speedwise he won't catch a TB but he certainly has get up and go...way too much actually!!!

My Big Cob is the opposite, slow and steady (and quiet dull sometimes)!!! No amount of kicking, squeezing or whatever will make him move more than he wants to. Try to engage your cobs brain, people make the mistake of thinking because they can be quiet and slow to ride that they are a bit thick but they do have a brain and like to use it!! Try doing some XC, that livens my boy up...and hunting...well it bounce bounce bounce will him the whole day!!! Anything that is exciting and new, try some Trek games with him, or just set up challanges in the school for him to do. Both my cobs go into zombie mode if I school them, I'm not sure it's a cob thing but I've yet to meet a cob that enjoys circles so try to make everything a game.

You don't think he could be anaemic or anything do you? Could always try some red cell and see if it makes a difference?

Otherwise, i'd say the three chance rule, squeeze first, then a sharp kick, then a sharp tap with a schooling whip. Then nothing until they slow down again. Eventually they get the idea if you're consistent and praise when they get it right, and start going off a squeeze. Dunno if it works with all lazies but deffo worked with the ones i've ridden. Give me a fast strong tank over a lazy arse any day though :P
