Ok first of all advice most appreciated:)

My cob x is being rather lazy at the mo and needs more sparkle. His weight is right but he is even more lazy than normaL. He is a cheeky coblet and takes any oppurtunity to grab a snack out hacking and also does it whilst pretending to think about having a wee!!!! Normally if I growl at him and all is well again. I took him out on his favourite ride that involveds lots of places to canter, buck and pop over logs...no spark what so ever, so much so that it is soul destroying to ride him and I do most of the work!!!! He is fed soaked hay, good-doer, vit n mineral supplement. He is fully clipped, works 5 times a week for a minimum of an hour sometimes 2 if we go miles. He is great to hack on his own, teeth has been checked, and saddler out next week.

What do you feed for that bit extra? I don't want anything that will put weight on him just a bit of a kick!!!!

Thank you in advance xxx :D

Is he ok? is it possible he has a virus or something?

If he is ok then I would just try adding a few oats to his feed. It is a myth that oats make all horses mad, but any feed giving energy has the potential to do so

Its also the cheapest way to do it:D

Do you always go out on your own? If so, maybe a bit of company would perk him up?

Does he seem well in himself?

i found my young horse was lacking a lot of energy as was having to diet him, so put him on baileys lo-cal balancer and his energy levels was noticeably different after 4 or 5 days on it :) still on it now and no worry of him putting weight on with it either :)

My duahgter's kick-along cobX is on a double handful of dengie HiFi original, soaked sugar beet, scoop of oats and scoop of competition mix. He has this twice a day. He also has a lunchtime feed which is the same but minus the oats. He lives in, is clipped, hunts all day on a saturday and is hacked or schooled 4 or 5 days in the week. He only gets about 4-5 hours turnout each day at the moment.

Since we changed the pony nuts to competition mix, he has a lot more energy, is more forward going and a lot more pleasurable to ride out. Before I felt like my legs were going to fall off with all the pushing along!

Blood liquid. Has he gone v fluffy recently? Mine has been a bit lacking in sparkle the last couple of weeks and has grown a ridiculous coat for winter-takes it out of them, so I hear.

Have you checked for worms? I'm only suggesting this as my friend's cob went rather listless with no energy, tried some time off - this helped a little, and then by chance she decided to dissect one of her fresh poos and found some worms. She had been on a worming programme at our yard for 5 months so we were all rather surprised.

Now the worms have been treated, coblet is back on form :)

what is his color like .. gums and inner eye lids? if very pale then run some bloods. if nice and pink i would give him oats! play around with the quantity til you find the req energy level. they will perk him up ! and maybe some redcell/liquid blood or other blood tonic/iron source.

Check temperature, pulse and bpm to check if he is okay physically my old pony lost his sparkle once did his temp and he was 1.5 degrees over normal rung vet and vet said he's probably got a virus so we rested him for a week and then he was fine after that.

If he's fine physically has the routine changed at all recently?

If routine is fine perhaps add a handful of oats to the feed but be carefull as I found when I give cobs oats they get bottled up and buck so I think slow release energy is better for cobby types :)

Thank you for all your replies..bit of a delay as I fell asleep!!!

Will check his obs and gums tomorrow, he has just had his second full clip as the first grew out so quick. He has been regularly wormed and his field is poo-picked but he has his own paddock due to asbo. Will send off a sample though just to make sure!!!

We do go out in company now and then but I do not have set hours so tend and prefer to go out on my own.

If nothing obvious I will try the oats and see if he picks up.

Thank you guys, sound advice as always :) xx
