Please let the record state that I actually cringed typing out coblet!! Anyway, my hairy, scruffy cob is now hogged and trimmed and turned out like a show cob. Sadly hes a midget and is only 14.1hh ish. But he really looks the part and has that thing that they either have or they dont. No one has told him hes a midget and he thinks hes something special as well  He really moves for a fat lump. and just has that sparkle that catches your eye. My YO really loves her showing and really rates him. She thinks he would be something special if he was a hand bigger, sadly he is not a hand bigger :( But shes been telling me all about coblet classes and suggesting he should go to Equifest.

I thought she was making it up at first, but a little bit of googling tells me she isnt. Does anyone know anything about coblet *cringe, cringe* showing? Is it just a case of them looking for a midget show cob? Does anywhere have classes other than equifest?

I'm really not sure I can be bothered with showing. I did a year on a top class show yard a fair few years ago, and it sickened me a bit, but he is a smart little cob and he really does love people watching him, and I would probably benefit from something to aim for :) So I'm just curious :)

I have never heard of coblet showing. I'll be following this thread because I am curious. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. I remember seeing pictures of your boy all hogged out, he does look super smart!

I would take him to equifest I think he'd do well and it's a real fun show, lots of fun families there and most people don't take themselves too seriously - chaotic though and it gets heaving so lots of patience and bombproof ing needed lol

I don't think you need to qualify to enter the coblet classes but if you do I'd find some local qualifiers and pop him in the general coloured class to get your ticket (not many shows would have a coblet class of their own) Rugby Riding Club are good, their shows are fun and friendly

I've seen very few coblet show classes other than equifest, I think they added it at popular request though so it may well catch on. The class at equifest is the same as a general show class for ponies, I suppose the pony NCT coloured class would be the closest comparison (though obviously not all coblets are coloured)

If you wanted to show other than equifest then I would show him as a coloured and a show cob (if no size specified) at local level he will more than hold his own against other competitors despite his size

thanks WD and CS :) I'm really not sure I want to be showing properly, but it would be good for his general education to at least do a couple of local shows, and it'll be good for me to have a bit of purpose :)

There's lots of local ones round here with general cob, coloured and riding club type etc to start off.

South kilworth, Rockingham riding club, Naseby show, Moulton.... :)

He is stunning, beautifully put together, of course he would do well. Why are you so surprised Frankiecob ?

I found the showing bloody hard work and sometimes unrewarding, judges comments !!!!!!!!! However it can be fun and I did have a good time. Give it a go, can't hurt ...

He had the winter off so nothing much to show for it since Eland lodge tbf. I don't really come on here much now.

But there's a couple

Go for it! as for the size, I found that a full up muscled cob looks a lot bigger than it actually measures and if your boy has that prescence that a good show horse has, he will make his mark.

Because I still think of him as a small, hairy pain in the bum  I still get a shock sometimes when I see his head over the door and it takes me a second or two to recognise him

We need pictures please :)
Of both "coblets".

Reminds me I haven't seen a CS Coblet pic for a while. That hunter trial one really made me grin.

I really should take some new pictures of him, this is the only half decent one I have where you can see all of him, almost in focus:

That's true people are always arguing with me that Daisy is bigger than she is (she isn't, I've measured her loads as I have the same argument with myself :D)

Smart Cob! You could also try the CHAPS classes for Natives,Trads and Hogged POnies. There are very few hogged and trimmed in those classes - you ll do well, esp if coblet moves feely from the shoulder!

I took a better pic of him today. Hes been doing lots of slow steady road work 5 times a week for the last 3 weeks and hes starting to get a little bit of muscle now. He definitely moves. That, and his nice head and black tail, was the reason I bought him when he was 2.5yr old

Our coblet showed seriously in his younger days going to RIHS as a coloured- coloured classes always allow them though you don't see many in the pony class, he's often the only hogged one in a class of 30! You need a LHC for affiliated pony coloured classes which when they come out at 147cm is actually frustrating as puts them out of cobs :p some local shows don't put a lower height on their novice cobs :)

Yeah, he would definitely measure in for 148cms classes, hes a midget  I've been looking and actually, a lot of the bigger but still local shows dont have height limits on their cob classes, I even found some in hand cob classes at a show in April, so I think we will have a go at one of those and see how we get on :)

No idea on coblet classes but I do rate the local pony club show in May at delapre abbey.
I like it because although it's local and you haven't got to be particularly fancy, the judges tend to know what they're talking about. They have a ridden cob and coloured class which (were) often judged by a chap that knew his stuff with coloureds and horses with a bit more (ahem) chunk to them. The only thing is it pays to be correctly turned out, although it's only Pony Club you won't necessarily find its always the members that win as opposed to those that really make the effort (not like me who forgot to take martingale stops off the reins one year and got pulled up on it)
I can't talk for the Inhand classes but the ridden have always been judged (relatively) fairly and by a separate judge to the Inhand.

Edited to add: I've always had good feedback and ways to progress as well. Although don't watch any of the show jumping as it's pretty cringe worthy down there.
