I wish to take issue with the suggestion that 'coblet' is used purely as a fluffy term of endearment.
As we all know, a 'cob' is not a breed of horse, but a type.
IMO, a 'coblet' is also a type, and refers to small (ish) hairy, solid, cobby type thing, often (but not always) of indeterminable breeding.
And anyway. It's a nice word.
N.B: according to Urban Dictionary (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=coblet) a coblet is in fact some form of gangster.
