My Draft horse doesn't intend to shiver! She has a VERY sturdy build and even after 4 yrs of dieting (since I got her) she still has a decent covering of blubber under her very hairy coat. She has decided views on the appropriate weather to put horses out in and anything less than dry in definitely inappropriate in her opinion. She stands under the wall sheltering from the weather, glaring every time she sees a human and will do just about anything she can think of to delay going out when she has been in her stable over night. She has been known, on more than one occasion, to turn round swiftly in the field gateway and dash back inside.
I'm not sure why she bothers though, as she always does have to go out.
Our two galloped up pretty quick as soon as we appeared in the yard this morning. Not shivering, but not too pleased with the wet stuff either. I don't blame them - I can't remember the last time it actually rained here and the fields have huge cracks.
My NF is like this! She's in at night, all year round, had a LW rug on last night, went to feed her this morning and found her shivering like big baby! She's hunter clipped in the winter, and has to have more rugs than the Andalusians! Silly pony!
I put rainsheets on my two last night as they are out 24-7 with no shelter in the bit they are on, torrential rain first thing when other half went to check on them so left sheets on, sun appears and it's warming up so popped down about ten to remove sheets, dose with fly spray and fly mask flies were awful and I must have looked like I was raving in the field flapping my arms around to get them off me! Got home and 20 mins later the biggest downpour in history it was horrific! Typical! So off I trundle again expecting two miserable ponies but they were quite happy and had nearly dried out! Have moved fencing to include some tall hedges now so at least they can get some relief from the worst of it they really do prefer to be out in all weathers
My welsh mountain pony is like this. He loathes rain, wind and cold and always has to be rugged up! He has a very large wardrobe for a very small pony...
