Hi all,

am currently in that saving stage and have decided that I will probably search for a chunky monkey ; o )

Want a nice natured cob, not bothered about age, experience etc just as long as it has a nice temp. and will look after me and will hack sensibly.

So question is - where did you look for yours?? Any pictures you have of course would be gratefully recieved!

Found mine in a field of three neglected ponies by a disused railway track....spent ages tracking down the owner in order to buy him.And told him to get the others sorted *sigh* Not much help, sorry :D

Think cobs come up on horsemart a lot ?

Good luck - coblets are the best ! sm x

A train carriage in Ireland....next to a sugar beet factory.....! Sorry, also not much help, but you do find horses in the most peculiar of places!

I think my chap was on Horse Deals? Had him 5 years this summer, been through a lot of ups and downs but he is a horse of a lifetime, I thought I would have to sell him this summer due to personal circumstances but have done everything in my power to keep him I would be devastated to let him go, the old saying one in a million is so true! He is from Ireland, where I don't know and was brought over by Lynn Russell, she sold him to his first owner and I bought him as a 4 year old from her in Oxfordshire, he was a private sale.

When I was thinking of selling him I was looking at prices to get an idea of his worth, it seems that really good ones that have done a lot go for a lot of money, and/or don't come up often! choose carefully though as they are not all plods as my boy has proved many a time!!! He's a fab alrounder does everything and is always placed at shows! and has a personality as big as himself!

Good luck!!!!!!!!!

Got mine from Leamington, they'd only had him four months after buying him from an old lady that couldn't handle him - he can be bargey.

I got him as a happy hacker to teach me to ride but he is querky. In the winter when he is feeling good, his canter tends to be flat-out gallop and for a short arse he can half shift!! I was too chicken to ride in the winter and got my friend to ride him luckily, she was really shocked at how quick he can move considering he's a h/w.

But he's lovely, he has a wonderful personality and I know when he's happy, stroppy, sad or frustrated with me - mostly frustrated with me for not riding him :)

Happy searching, there's a lovely piebald on H&H at the moment:

Advert says he's a bit nervy though but a gorgeous boy.

Mine came from Smiths Farm Horses. Sold as bombproof, she isn't BUT having said that 5 years on I still have her and cannot imagine my life without her, she's a total poppet. Every bone in her body is honest. Can hack out with company like a dream, we're just starting to build up our solo hacks. We'll get there, eventually :D Good luck in your search.

Zak - from a dealer who rescued him from a field somewhere
Midi - From a barmy old woman who kept her without water and fed her lettuce (true stories!)
Dorey - from a dealer near gatwick, who now specialises in connies and jumpers
Mushi - from a very odd dealer who gave us the wrong passport and wanted our address 6 months later to send a christmas card...
Emma - Beeston

You either want to go through word of mouth or go looking in the oddest places!!

But - stay AWAY from the 'safe cobs' and horsemart lot, they're even dodgier dealers than the one we got Mushi from!!!

This is Harvey, who I got from Emma Hinkley at Clip Clop Traders - highly recommended!

I bought mine from a riding school - who sell youngstock as a side like. He was only broken a few months & very hairy and scruffy. Some times a little vision is needed lol.

I got mine from Ireland, unbroken, basically handled as a 4 year old, oh yes i brought him from a video and he was shipped over!!!! it was from The irish horses website.

He is now fabulous, I went through the normal blood sweat and tears breaking and riding away, but to hack he has been a saint from the day he was broken. It has taken him 3 years to mature now he is a true HW cob and looks amazing but then im very biased!!!

This is Dolly. I shared her for 2 years before buying her 7 years ago.

This is Mac. He sort of found me. People that owned him were scared of him and didn't really do much with him so I persuaded them to let me have him. He's a Suffolk cross, so not technically a cob, but is a good solid chunky monkey.

I found my gelding on Coloured Contacts nearly 7 years ago now.
My mare I found in the local paper 5 years ago.

I answered an advert from a trekking centre advertising for "winter loan homes" for their horses and His Nibs duly arrived.

To cut a (very) long story short, I ended up doing the proverbial falling in love (soppy) bit and bought the hairy monster. Its a good way to get a horse really coz you've got loads of time to see what he/she's like and then if you like what you've got they may rise to the bait if you make a sensible offer, especially in the current climate with a lot of riding schools/trekking centres having to downsize, but make sure they don't fob you off with their undesirables tho'!

For good show cob types: www.theirishhorse.com are v good. or Lynn Russell has some lovely ones too!!

horsequest has a page dedicated to cobs and traditionals etc.

Lots of private sales accessible through the websites like horse and hound, horsequest, horsedeals, horsemart etc etc

Lots of happy looking time!!! :)

where are you based? as I know of a lovely little lady looking for a home near nottingham but she needs a bit of work as was left out in a field for 3 years to just get fat and be a field ornament, then owner went o don't want her now!! she is a pet, just needs basics putting back in!
