Right we have a 11 month old cocker spaniel she is a bit opinionated but very bright and once she knows what you mean she’s on it, I’d like her to come out beating with me and I’d like to know basically how to train her for it, at the moment she walks to heel on and off lead, has good recall (for a spaniel), sits, stays and lays down. I’ve never known her to chase any birds like chickens or ducks so i don’t know if she would be any good at it. So basically what I’m asking is for a bit of guidance on where to go next, she isn’t getting sent away for training or anything like that as she is very much a one persons my boss dog, if she can’t do it it’s not the end of the world as she is a well loved member of the family I just think she would do well with a job *picture of said madam for attention *

As above, look around for a local gundog trainer, there is also Facebook pages, and surely there must also be books available on the subject.

I might be wrong, but from my non gundog owning point of view, a gundog's interest in fetching/carrying things, and how much they want to work, seems more important for how likely it is that they can become a good gundog, than simply if they're showing an interest in birds which they happen to see or meet.

A spaniel doesn't need to be obsessed with retrieving to go beating. Most do, some don't. Where are you op? I know a really good spaniel man near Colchester. There are some very hard trainers, I would strongly avoid them, make sure you get a personal recommendation.

We are near Peterborough so Colchester is a bit far

Have a look for some sundog training groups near you. The kennel club may be able to help. Unfortunately I think most groups seem to spend time on training during the spring/summer outwith the season but worth asking around and maybe booking for the new year.

This is true, but a group may be able to recommend an instructor? Good suggestion Thistle.
You yube can get you started. :-)
