Cockers! Why so popular?

Does it not depend very much on the strain? for temperament and trainability. We have only had one, a Working Cocker, fabulous dog, ex field trial competior. She lived to 15yrs old and worked untill 14 although latterly she was only allowed to do short days, mornings only. If we could replace her we would......

Sometimes, but I have certainly met my share of working types that were just as hyper (or more so) than their show type counterparts. What makes them easier, in the grooming salon at least, is their lack of hair which means the grooming experience is generally easier/faster. But I've met some neurotic acting ones of both types.

Our golden cocker is called Manchee (actually a name from a book about a very loyal and obedient dog, ironically...) He is now 2.

We have had two cockers (my dad used to have one when he was young). I mean, they were both pretty useless for anything other than being very loveable and going on walks.

Well they aren't very nice to look at that's for sure.

(can I post that... she is a sprocker :D )

And of course they don't get on with other dogs ;) hehe!

It does depend on their lines as well. Pixel is from a line well known for having mellow loving family dogs. You get good and bad of all breeds though. Pixel could be classed as a bad because of her issues.

Awwww Hen you're so cute! Pixel says huber huber! :D

Because thay are lovely! You can go from this:

They are dogs that make you smile full of fun and daftness! Intelligent and easy to train. A size where they can easily fit in your car and pick up yet not like a small dog. Easy hair care (for me anyway I just clip with horse clippers every so often). They will entertain themselves to a certain degree not like colllies who need constant stimulation. They do not have an inbuilt kill instinct so good with stock/other pets. Not a yappy dog. AND.....

They have lovely ears!

Heehee is this turning into our very own AAD version of "Why do people want to own cobs?!" :D

OP - I was going to remark the other day that it had been AGES since I last saw a spangle (of any variety) round my way...but then realised I think you and PucciNponi are in the same neck of the woods as me :o Obviously move in different circles - most popular ones round here at the moment are Border Terriers! Lots of BT pups at the moment :D

I think I'll always be a spangle-girl at heart, but as with every breed - there will be differences. My pound-dog sprocker was a delight, but I have no doubt there are ill-mannered/trained ones out there too!

(ETS: everyone who has posted their photos better increase their home security...I'm up for stealing all of these! Can't believe how grown-up baby puppy Winston is either  :D)

Numptynoelle - yup I just can't understand why people would want dogs like this when you could have greyhound *cough* thoroughbred *cough* when these dogs never shiver pathetically or are constantly hurting themselves  just don't get it! :D

I'm partial to a nice longdog every now and again too....especially one as handsome as Mr Barney :p :D

I had 2 gorgeous cockers. I lost 1 aged 15 and 1 aged 16, a couple of years ago. Both were loyal, loving and generally fab. The bitch was a little hyper at times, but the dog was perfect. To my shame, both were puppy farmed (I bought them 20 years ago and it never occurred to me). When you get a good one, they can make the most wonderful pets.

I've never tried a working line and may have just been very, very lucky. I had to change breed after I lost Jake, I couldn't try to replace him. I'm a spectating only member of the spaniel massive thoug!

I was just thinking the other day that the breed's mentality seems to have changed lately. There were quite a few around when I was younger and they were all happy, confident dogs. The ones I met recently have all been nervous and hide behind their owners legs. I just assumed its because the type of people who own them has changed.

Pixel doesn't smell at all...

Sweep does some days but that is because we live on a farm and he climbs the muck heap and then wades around in the brook:D:D:D but then so does Max....:D:D:D

Still that is why he is kept clipped and washed off on a regular basis:D

Still no doggy breath or manky teeth or stinky farts as he eats bones......;):D

love em!!!
have 2 and a lab, ours are working strain and as tough as old boots!
they are excellent working dogs, and equally as good at lying on the sofa!
great with people and other dogs too.

although ours work they are never clipped out, just bathed and "Cowboy Magic" on their fluffy bits, great for getting the tangles out ;)

as with all dogs, the behaviour is a reflection of the owners......

but be warned, once you've had a cocker there's no going back!!! ha ha

Aww cockers are adorable and loving. And if anything like my boy can be a little plonkerish at times But are just so loving because.........

They start off like this

I have an epagneul bleu de picardie dog, he looks just like a blue roan cocker except the size of a large retreiver (I use to live in france). He is a great dog, very good, not bouncy, frantic or any of the things you describe, I previously have had working cockers and very similar to him in temprement, great in every way.
Show type cockers can be hyper, they are suppose to be a working dog breed and have the energy to deal with a hard days work, but the two types are distinctive now with one being more dome shaped head and the other slightly broader scull and body shape. They are great pets but all spaniel types need stimulation in vast quantities.
