Code on my saddle

I hav a saddle that came with my horse. UNderneath it has a number etched into the leather. Is this standard thing that would have been put there when the saddle was made or would the last owner have put it in to protect it or something. Sorry if the latter is a stupid idea that I've made up lol!

If it looks like it has been stamped and not scratched in then it is likely the unique ID that the saddle maker gave it - you would be able to phone them and find out exactly what the saddle is, though bear in mind the width may have been changed.
