I'm window shopping. As you do. I have only in recent years taken dog purchasing seriously and now like to make well informed decisions.

I was looking at Bedlington puppies on the KC website.

So one litter.
Dam is at 32.3%
Sire is at 10.5%
Offspring coming in at 23.3%

Now I do not claim to have any real understanding of dog breeding, however I thought the idea was to have the percentage as low as possible? Looking at the other litters on there, some of the puppies are as low as 5%, so it is clearly not a problem with the gene pool?

Is someone able to explain why someone would seemingly want to have a higher percentage of inbreeding? Also realistically, how likely would it be that this higher percentage causes problems?

Thanks in advance for the education.

Is that quite high on the dam’s side? Possibility they’re not very common so the gene pool is limited? Does the KC not give the average COI of breeds?

Edit: average is 12% https://www.dogbreedhealth.com/bedlington-terrier/ Not sure I’d be happy with 23%. Is there line breeding going on in the pedigree? There won’t necessarily be problems, my bil’s dog has the same grandfather on both sides and he’s fine. Someone with more idea than me can tell you if a grandparent features twice to produce 23% COI.

Edit #2 25% indicates parent to offspring or sibling to siblings: https://www.dogbreedhealth.com/a-beginners-guide-to-coi/
