(sorry not sure whether this is the right place to post this)

For Christmas I would like to get my dad something so that he can enjoy better coffee than the stuff from the Kenco jar occasionally.

Please could you recommend, to a person that knows nothing about coffee, a coffee related present?

How about a percolator? Find a good coffee shop and you should be able to buy the gadgets and often some boxes filled with different bags of coffee, kind of like a selection box. Makes a great present!

There's a few ideas on this website. If you get real coffee then make sure it's ground and not the beans. I also have a dolce gusto machine with pods but prefer 'real' coffee. Last time I went to my local farmers market, there was a guy selling coffee and he explains the different flavours, strengths and gadgets - farmers markets are great for that kind of thing!

Rubs hands gleefully together...
This is my second fav topic after gee gees :)
Ok....if he doesn't own a percolator...you could get him one or if finances may be a little short...(Lakeland do a 'coffee fo one ' percolator).... a caffetiaire will do.
Now coffee wise.....IMO the best coffee you can get is Jamaican Blue Mountain - very expensive....we are talking £25 for a quarter of a pound...and if the harvest was not good in 2012...it will be way more expensive.....
However....Whittards (if they are still trading) do a lovely presentation box of several different types and strengths of coffee so he could have a try of a few.
My suggestion would be to go and visit your local coffee shop that does ground...they would have presentation packs.....failing this have a look on the interweb....FairTrade do a lovely line in presentation packs and their Elephant Coffee is really nice....
What a treat your Pa is in for......Oooohh I wish it was me :)
Best wishes
