My farrier had a baby on Wednesday so can't make it hence going to vet- most farriers don't like treading on other's toes so no one else I rang was willing to come up!
Ask your farrier to recommend another one, or ring up local vet school, to be honest round here most of the better farriers will help each other out, we have five good ones, and only one poor one! You horse's health is a priority.
I would consider poulticing, ie treating as for abscess, presumably it can't do any harm.

have treated both, pedal bone fracture was 8 months box rest as one of the 'wings' had fracture away from the main body, full recovery.
abscess treatment? how long is a piece of string? some take weeks and weeks or even months to fullt resolve without reforming every time the hole closes up

Bruises can result in abscesses.

... and sub solar absesses can be very sore and take a long time to heal as new sole has to grow underneath, think of a blister but having to walk on it.
I think the vet sounds very sensible, especially not digging. The rush to open up hooves (particularly sole) at every available opportunity I will never understand!

Good luck for the X Rays.

He's the same today - 6/10ths lame. I didn't poultice last night because he's really hard to do and I'm pregnant so it's not very easy. If previous owners had handled his feet more might not have been such a challenge. Will get my husband to help tonight and try again

What a nightmare. It can be a fiddly enough job if they are good, let alone if they are tricky. I hope things resolve themselves for you. Fingers crossed it's and abscess and it pops soon!

If you can't get a poultice on you can't don't risk getting kicked ,if it is a abscess it will sort in time .
Hope it all works out .

Hi, I have been fortunate with these myself, but was on a livery yard where a horse had a broken pedal bone. It was 6 months on box rest, with a bar shoe to support and stabilise the foot. The last two months included walking out in hand for ever increasing times, up to about an hour. The extended walking in hand to build up the resistance in the foot without the horse having a blat! It did come sound, but was quite an unhappy horse anyway, blood tested for a rig, but no er, parts to remove so to speak. It was consistently bizarre in its behaviour (the cause of the broken pedal bone too) and in the end was sadly PTS.

On the other hand a friend had a horse that was not right for months, and even Xrays did not diagnose. After some time turned away, when shod by the farrier the whole sole dropped off, it would seem like there was the mother of all abscesses under there. The sole grew back and the horse was fine :)
