he has had x rays and mri, shows some changes to coffin joint but not enough to warrant the level of lameness, but who knows! I think i will be taking his shoes off and resting him for 6 months, perhaps in hand walks to dull the boredom.....its a tough one, he doesn't understand retirement and have friends saying i am giving up too easily and to carry on with various treatments but I cannot see him jumping again, havent told him this yet!!!!

My mare has coffin joint arthritis and she was very reluctant to canter. She would be very laboured and 4 beat. She then started struggling in trot so is now retired and happy out in the field

I haven’t read all of the replies but my guess would be that there is something else going on in the feet and I’d want an mri of the hooves doing ( speaking from experience) my lovely boy’s x-rays were text book but the mri showed tears to both DDFT in the hooves. I wouldn’t have got this answer without the mri.

Yes flexion tests in ALL legs fine! trotted off sound and bouncy! weight under control finally, allowed into fat side for a few hours and he has just galloped hard....a good 10 strides sound before bouncing to a stop, its defo his fronts...but I cannot understand how he is not lame at all in trot!!!! Be interested to see how you get on with your horse, best of luck!! x
Thought I would give you a little update on my mare in case it helps you too!

She went back into the vets for another very expensive day. We x-rayed all round again and her “bad” foot (historical lami) is looking fine but she had negative angles behind, which they are now thinking has affected her SI joint. She is having wedges and shod with pads all round. Then once her feet are a bit more comfortable they are going to treat her SI joint.

With any luck this will help her 🤞🤞🤞
