My horse has just had coffin joint injections. How long after the injections did you turn out? My horse looses the plot on box rest when the other horses go out. So bar keeping the whole herd in too I’m just wondering what the reasons are for box rest after. Is it to prevent infection and or movement? We soon also need hock injections I’m wondering if this will need the same management?any help and experience would be great thanks

Stick to the recommended period of box rest if you can. It's to keep the joint medication in the area it's supposed to be in, rather than it dissipating out into a wider area if the horse is moving around too much/too quickly. Will be the same for hocks.

I think my vet recommends 3 full days on box rest, and I stick to that.

My mare had gel (not steroid) injections in both front coffins 2 years ago, they've worked very well.

Good luck.

I turned out straight away on vet's instructions as he would have stable walked non stop in but is very quiet in the field and the herd is very settled with little running around. He did have the injection site vet bandaged to prevent infection though. I removed it after 24 hours.

The first two (10 years apart ) worked really well. The third (18 months after the 2nd) didn't have any effect and he retired - he was 24/5 at this point though. 2 years on he's looking better than he ever has - naked, hairy, fat, filthy and loving life. He won't have another invasive injection.
