Ronan's fractured pedal bone has affected the joint as I feared. Saw the xrays yesterday and some healing has taken place, (even a bit of calcification), over the 9 weeks since it happened but the fact that the joint is damaged really worries me.

Vet says it's hard to say, may come back as a light hack and maybe better than that but maybe worse...

Has anyone any experience of this and advice to offer please? He has 3 shoes off now and the affected foot has a rim bar shoe - had that on for 8 weeks, with a little bute which we are going to wean him off.

Vet will see him in 8 weeks to see if he trots up sound.

He is 17 h ISH and we don't do a lot of competiton - just a bit of jumping, dressage a bit and lots of beach/fun stuff. But being able to hack twice a week for 40 minutes isn't enough I'm afraid...

Not the exactly the same but not good news from me I'm afraid. My boy has soft tissue damage within the coffin joint (collateral ligament) and as a result associated changes within the coffin joint. He retired two months ago aged 10yrs. We battled to keep him sound for eighteen months after diagnosis but even then he was only a hack.
However, I know that if there is no soft tissue damage and only changes within the joint then this is better news and can be treated with steriod injections. Sounds like it is going to be a case of wait and see I'm afraid. Good luck.

Another "not great news" post
Our big J horse has coffin joint arthritis. Was lame last summer, came sound/back into work in the Autumn. We started hunting at Christmas (quiet days with little road work). He finished the season sound

but has now gone about 3/5 lame as the ground has hardened

He is in the middle of IRAP treatment but has got worse

Thank you people. I will pm l_p_p as you suggest jules.

As you say it's a wait and see, Marchtime. Really sorry to hear you have had to retire your 10yo..

And good luck to you D_D_D..It would be really good if it ended happily for you..
