Update on a fresh thread for anyone interested in coffin joints as the last thread descended into carnage if i remember right.

The vet came today to medicate Lari's coffin joint.

He went out last night perfectly sound, I got him in this morning and he started off pottery but by the time he got back to his stable he was very lame on that off fore and pointing it again. Most weird.

As the vet was due I replaced his breakfast with another containing no bute and thought it would be good for the vet to see him.

I think she was surprised. She sedated him and clipped his foot and then nerve blocked him. He was completely sound again and blocked positive.

So she placed a needle in the coffin joint and the synovial fluid just poured out like a tap. It's meant to be viscous and when placed between finger and thumb it's meant to spread out like mozzarella cheese. Vet said the way it presents gives a strong indication that it's a sign of inflammation which is good news because then we were able to medicate it with steroid and HA. It was last done in November 2021 so obviously needed it.

So he's in until Saturday evening and then out in a postage stamped paddock for a week before returning to his normal sized paddock although I'll move it every day and leave hay out.

If this hasn't worked we'll be looking at having the navicular bursa medicated because it could also be this. Funnily enough i spoke to GP who keeps her horses in the yard and she wondered if it was that from this on/off lameness, so assume same is true with people too.

I spoke to visiting farrier last night and he felt it was probably more likely to be that although when I told him Lari's breed he did say that Holsteiners are very prone to having coffin joint issues which is something I wasn't aware of.
