I am really confused. I thought the coffin joint was also known as the pedal bone and I know the term pedal bone is more often used in America. However, on looking at a popular monthly horse magazine over the weekend a picture showing a coffin joint with an arrow pointing to it clearly labelled 'coffin joint' is shown with another arrow pointing to another area of the foot labelled 'pedal bone'. What's going on? I am well confused. They are the same thing aren't they now matter what they are called???
Another confusing moment has arisen because my friend had her vet out to her mare the other day and the vet said her mare had an inflammed coffin joint as he could feel it. How can you feel the coffin joint - it is deep within the structures of the foot behind about 5 cm of laminae, isn't it? Surely I am correct on this? Please help, I feel I am going mad!
