Cold doggy - what to do??

I'm a bit worried that Star isn't going to cope very well with the winter at all! She's ok when we are out and about, but she keeps getting really cold when we are is the house and it's not even very cold yet!! She shivers in the day time and at night when she sleeps on her bed.

She is a GSP so not the hairiest of dogs - do you think she is just particularly sensitive to the cold? Do I need to buy her some pajamas??

Could it be from excitement? She's not under par from anything else, hasn't picked up a bug from somewhere?
Otherwise, you could just have a light jacket for her while in the house/garden and take it off when you take her for exercise - else she will be the most laughed at gsp among the canine fraternity that she hangs out with!
 
i think i'd put a single electric blanket under her bed, if it's already a warm one up off the floor. if not, a raised bed makes a huuuge difference, with a nice toasty old quilt on it, wrapped in a sheet that can be washed easily.
 
Thanks guys. I'm pretty sure she is fine health-wise, but I'll keep an eye on her just in case. We got her in March and she was a bit of a wimp then until it warmed up a bit so I think she is just a wimp!

I might get her a jacket for when she is downstairs and then an electric blanket for under her bed (thanks K I hadn't thought of that!), she sleeps in our room and her bed is on the floor - it's not cold though with the carpet and everything. she had to get in bed this morning for a big cuddle to warm up!

Then when we got up she just stayed in bed! Lazy tart!

She's getting an electric blanket because hot water bottles go cold after a bit!

My boy, 7/8ths whippet, other bit unknown, already has his winter jacket on, we don't molly coddle him (out dogs live in the utility room, which is freezing) but he feels the cold.

Your dog will have a similar lack of coat, just get a coat for him the Masta ones (as in the pic) are cheap and cheerful, also available in reflective yellow if your dog goes on the roads a bit. To be sure of your dogs coat size, measure from the back of the neck to the top of the tail.
 
We know a little something about dogs and cold weather (it regularly gets down to -15c in NYC over winter!

I have a warm fleece for Stella, and will sometimes put a thin layer under that for those days when the windchill makes it feel even colder. Poor love still judders if we don't keep moving.

And the fleece doesn't restrict her movement one bit

we bought our dog two coats, one masta fleece and one wetherbeeta, from 4dobbin.com to warm her up in her old age as she spends most days outside or in the van with the oh. she is a staffie but be warned, you can measure to your hearts content but i bet the size you think is right is too big!

my whippets have their coats on now BB.....shivering is the action carried out to keep the body warm...or so I was told at sometime or another....so effectivley she should be keeping her self warm.....but try a coat for her as suggested, as a single coated breed sh will feel the pinch more

Do your whippets wear there jackets in the house?? Can you point me in the direction if any good websites?

No I don't think Alfie needs a rug! although if I come across something really cute he might have to have it!

My whippet dosent wear her coat in the house, but she is wearing her quilt now when i walk her and at the yard. Shes also got a 'heavyweight' (!) waterproof coat, a knitted jumper, and a shower coat, so i can layer up if needed!!
 
See, I don't understand Star!! she doesn't get cold at all when she's out but sits there shivering in the house! I hope my OH feels like a scrouge! We clearly don't have the heating on enough!

normally they crawl under a quilt/sleeping bag....maybe get a spare quilt so she can burry herself in it.

from a woman who knows my mam....they are quilted/water proof type ones....u will probably get a nice one of ebay....just give her a quick measure.

Get ALF a barber jacket....nothing poncy

www.hyperdrug.com have some lovely rugs at different thicknesses for around £6.99!

They fitted my GSP when he was alive-he has 28 inches and different thicknesses! I did get laughed at, at first as he was a HPR dog and was a field trial champ etc but I was his retirement home and he was given to me when he was 10! He had 7 more wonderful years running about in his coats!

He was quite funny if he went to peoples houses to visit he would bark continuously at their fires if they weren't lit or radiators if the heating wasn't on!!!! And being gun deaf too it was very funny!!!

My dobermann now has inherited his rugs and has got more to his wardrobe! They are very handy to keep them warm and dry!
