my two cobs one ridden one not have had intermittent cold/virus type symptoms

started about a month ago both had slightly snotty noses- white or clear (mostly clear) and gluey like consistency not thick and not yellow or green, only on nostrils haven't seen it drip/run at all, didn't smell

this has been intermittent maybe once a week il see this snot, sometimes they have had just watery discharge again not dripping or anything (normal really if I wasn't staring at their noses all the time in paranoia!) the majority of the time they have had dry noses so I think oh that's it they are over it and then a few days later I see snot/runny nose again!.

Both have been fit and well in themselves still full of beans- although I haven't ridden because of this. Had honing round the field sessions etc. Never have they had a temperature and im checking it three times a day and they are both eating well and look fantastic. Vet saw them about two weeks ago and was very chilled about it said it was probably a virus and if they got worse/ill in themselves/high temperature to call her again but she didn't want to give antibiotics at that stage. Well they have never been sick in themselves or sorry but vet is coming Monday again as I feel this is dragging on- I know monday is still a few days away but its really not an emergency case and she cant get here til then and id rather stick with my usual vet. Today incidentally they have dry noses and ive seen no pattern in relation to weather etc

They both live out 24/7 are otherwise healthy cobs and around six years old. Both are vaccinated.

is this likely to be just a virus they are dragging out? or could it be something in the field?- they have been fine in this field previously but my other two haven't had any symptoms at all which if it was a virus even with me being hot on biosecurity you would think would have got to them by now? they cant reach each other as there is a courtyard between the fields.

no point to this post really I have the vet booked but I guess I just wondered if anyone had experienced/is experiencing anything like this?

Vet coming today now as got an emergency in the village this morning and coming to me after. Was hoping for some hho famous vibes or even a few stories with a happy ending- where is everyone!

Don't stress - I'm sure it's just a virus, or possibly maybe pollen (rapeseed??). Mine had one last year, took a good couple of months to fully clear up. And my last horse used to get a cold (or something like that) every year the week after his vaccination boosters.

Thanks chestnut cob I'm having the I'm a terrible owner moment as I've let it drag on but it's difficult to know what to do for the best. I had flu in feb and I'm only feeling 100% now it's just time passes so slowly when you want to ride and can't!

You're being daft now - you've already had the out once and this is the second time so it's not as if you've ignored the issue. You'd be a terrible owner if you'd done one of those "OMG my horse is gushing blood and lame, can I put Savlon on his leg" type posts instead of getting the vet, but you didn't. Horses can get viruses just like we can, and they can take time to clear up too. Chill, it will be fine ;)

Thank you!
Yes it's def not a 'my horse is lying on the floor groaning in pain would tumeric help?' Type post! I'm just a worrier!

Yellow snot indicates infection. Clear/white I would imagine would be allergy. I would imagine something like rape causing this. Any glands up? Try not to worry (I know its hard!) You are doing everything you can and vet should be able to reasure you. xxx

Thanks guys vet been
Confirmed that they have no temperature or desperately sick signs given five days anti biotics and a ventipulmin type powder too. She thought it more likely to be an infection than an allergy as both have it.

Juney is worse as has slightly high respiratory rate but both chests sound ok. Vet did suggest maybe she has a bit of rao? But to see how it goes.

Still worried about them wish I could fast forward five days to see if they are better or not and of course then another week to check it doesn't come back! Hoping it is just something like a virus they are dragging out.

Thanks guys they both seem happy enough just had mad five minutes galloping and bucking round the field so can't be too bad!
