My hands always suffer in cold weather... The sides of my fingers get loads of tiny cracks that are quite sore.

Any recommendations for this? I currently use a cream I bought from the Pharmascist called aqueous cream BP

E45 cream is an aqueous cream and you don't need a prescription. If you find it a bit wet - I do - try udder cream. I know it sounds daft (and avoid the pink one with hibi scrub in it!) but it is thick, coating, neutral to the skin and just great. Discovered by accident when treating a patch of mud fever with it!

Udder cream - seconded!
Anything with bee's wax in it is fab for me.
Or Body shop - Hemp cream and oil- fab rescues!

Other than trying to keep hands dry at all times - actually wash them less if you can *(Sounds gross, but really saves the skin!)
Wear gloves all the time - no really, all the time...
and get those cotton gloves to 'soak' your hands in cream overnight.

Hemp cream has just been recommended by my oncologist. The chemo did a lot of damage to the skin on my hands and feet. Nothing worked and once I started doing the horses again my hands were raw. Been using the Hemp cream 5 days and cannot believe the difference. Pricey but well worth it if you are in a mess.

I have Neutrogena too and while it's very good, I don't really like the sticky sort of feeling it leaves on my hands. I think I put too much on but if I put less on it rubs in to one part of my hand before I have a chance to spread it about! I find Atrixo very good and Vaseline intensive care. The Vaseline in particular I slather on before bed and wear white cotton gloves overnight. They've usually come off by the morning and my OH takes the mick every night, but it's worth it! Almond oil is good under the gloves too but I find it can make them more slippery so they come off more easily.

Best thing in the world the body shop hemp hand cream!

I use it and so does my mom who has various skin conditions.

another vote for the Body Shop Hemp Cream, I carry it round in my bag and apply a few times daily. Second favourite is Boots Soap n Glory Hand Food, very nice!

I have never used udder cream but its very cheap and supposed to be good.
My hands get sore every year, and what seems to work one year doesn't the next. I would wear gloves as much as possible if you are not already and avoid getting your hands wet. I apply cream every time I wash my hands even if it says once a day. E45 is a good emollient but useless as a barrier cream. My favourites at the moment are Palmers, and a large tube of Aveeno, both cheap, don't rule out supermarket own brands.

I use Aveeno hand cream and find it better than the Body Shop Hemp cream; I also slather on Gloves In a Bottle which is a shielding lotion and works brilliantly on my hand eczema.

I suffer the same but my hands bleed :(

I use cracked heel cream and once the cracks have healed, I slather in a porridge based cream I can remember what it's called though! Gloves at night are a must too!!

The best thing i have ever used on my hands is Snowfire.......after a previous recommendation on HH forum You can buy it in chemists or online. I haven't had splits on my fingers for 2 winters because of this stuff. I was told by my beauty therapist friend Aqueous cream is actually drying for skin as it contains a lot of water........ may be wrong though!

I hate aqueous cream and never had any success with it. For dry skin the most important thing is regular application so find something that's not disgustingly greasy/oily/leaves a residue or is perfumed and apply as often as possible. I use aveeno myself and it's very good. It says it moisturises for 24 hours and while that's true you need to apply more often to problem skin in my experience.

Superglue for the cracks - it takes away ALL that pain! And wear gloves ALL the time when at the yard. I've been doing this this winter and I've found my hands are far less cracked than usual. I do look weird when it is warm enough to work in a light sweatshirt and yet I'm still wearing gloves, but it's working for me so I don't care!!!

Gilbert and soames Bee Kind body lotion, my mum uses it as hand cream after I pinched her a sample out of a hotel room. She's a butcher, so in and out of cold and damp, and it really has worked wonders for her.

The Body Shop Hemp stuff. You can get 'hand protector' which you put on before you go out, works a treat.

Buy some duoderm extra thin dressings online and apply as sheets around the fingers and cracks of the hands. They will protect the skin and promote the healing of the cracks. Leave on for several days if possible. Once the skin is healed WASH the hands with Epaderm ointment (£3 from the chemist) instead of hand wash or soap. Apply the ointment thickly to the hands at night and pop on the cotton gloves for maximum moisturisation.
Bin the aqueous cream its actually a soap to be used with water and pretty rubbish for anything else!!

O'Keefes working hands cream!

Amazing stuff!

I have this. Apparently cream containing urea, which this does, is best for splits.

Did this, screamed a bit. It stings! It only lasted a day, my hands are constantly in water.

Keep applying the cream(s) a lot, put a tub of your chosen cream at every tap, sink etc and in every jacket pocket and apply, apply, apply.

Once a day or twice is not enough to keep moisture levels up in this weather. Remembering to put something on is the hard bit, my hands look rubbish!
