On Friday I bathed my horse and put suncream on his lips - he has pink and black spots all over his muzzle (typical appaloosa) but he doesnt really ever burn.
His mouth was clear of any kind of lesions, Id have seen if he'd had any kind of sores. The following afternoon I found three scabs on his lips, they're kind of to the side (not the bit that would touch the floor as he grazes) in the place where the top lip meets the bottom (ie not likely to be sunburn), they look like really big cigarette burns each between the size of a 5p and a penny, and were crusty blackish. At first I thought omg I'm a horrible mother I've forgotten to clean his bit and made it sore or something, then I realised that they arent anywhere near his bit.
They didnt seem sore to touch, and the following day I had a lesson. My instructor said her horse has one too, her yard is miles away. Today my horse has five, there were no blisters that I saw, just the scabs! Today I showed the YO and she said three of hers have them too, none of them are turned out with mine but she said her big mare did have a blister yesterday, just fluid under the skin like a coldsore, and today it had dried up to the cig burn type thing Alfie has. And my cousin's horse, about 40 miles from here has them as well.
Am I missing something? Is there something seasonal? I've been told they could be grass sores (google brings up nothing on these) or coldsores, it just seems odd that a lot of horses seem to have them at the moment.
