Colic advice

Please help!

When the weather takes a turn, my mare becomes unwell with colic. A few days ago, we had the vet down for quite a severe case- which luckily she fought through. The same thing happened last year. Our vet has ran tests and has told us it is ‘just one of those things’ which I can completely understand.

We have been told that she experiences ‘gassy colic’ and are now looking for a recommended supplement/ feed to support her. We have two geldings who love to pass wind (a lot!) but our mare has never been the same- she does poop lots though.

Please can you recommend some supplements to support. I heard about Coligone, but read a review that it can have a huge impact on them if they come off the supplement. What’s everyone’s experiences?

I've fed Coligone, I found the liquid better than the powder. I'm using Acid Ease for my mare, who also had the vet for colic on Friday (typically almost back to normal by the time the vet arrived 🙄). We think she'd pigged out on her hay replacer overnight as it was so cold, whereas she normally 'grazes' it .

A friend used the colikare with good results. Her mare is similar and would take gassy colic about this time of year. She always has a 25ml syringe beside the bottle so if anyone ever noticed her “off” she got that immediately and walked up and down the hill to fart it out. She got it in her daily feed just after coming off the grass.

Ours was Friday too and similar!
We had the vet in the morning who told us to monitor. By midday she took a turn, so the vet was called again. By the time the vet arrived, we looked like we had completely exaggerated as she was back to her sassy self! Her bloods came back clear, but we worry so much as it was this time last year she got it too. Thanks for the advice, so you use both Coligone and acid ease together? Or is acid ease just temporary?

I'd be tempted to increase her water intake too by feeding wet haynets and sloppy feeds having been down this road myself.

She's just on Acid Ease now. I found it cheaper than Coligone and it works better for her I think.
 
How odd, one of mine had a gassy episode on Friday too!!

She was pawing and rolling, I gave her some Colikare and rang the vet. By the time he rang back she was tucking into her haylage.

Checked an hour later and absolutely fine.

She's had a dose of colikare last 2 nights just in case, but 100% back to normal.
 
My lad had a bit of episode a few weeks ago. I always use liquid parrafin. It always helps for gassy colic. Obviously if it's more severe then I will call vet.

Also want to mention that in chilly weather my mare is reluctant to drink cold water - I add hot water to make the water tepid and therefore more palatable for her.

Yes I also used to do that.
And on the Summer I strip grazed and changed water every 2nd day in the paddock (scrubbing out/emptying/refilling). You'd be surprised how many top up day after day but never empty and scrub buckets out. If you put your finger along the bottom you get a nice thick grey gunge. I've seen silver fish in people's water buckets too! That makes them more predisposed to colic!

Did she fill the syringe with the liquid from colikare or was it a syringe with something else?
