Evening all! I am hoping you all could give me a little advice? Beccy who normally posts for GreenLivery is away tonight and I am her OH, but i have aproblem i havent had to deal with too much before and could use some help!

I think she posted that my mare had colic at night the other week whilst I was away so I didn't see how she was, but tonight she has come down with it again.

Last time it was green hay that set her off we think, but this time the hay was fine. I think it could have been the sudden change in weather and icy grass, and the stress of having lights on ove night as we have been tagged by the horse thieves. I called the vet as she was so bad that I had to get really strong with her to get her up as she get just dropping down to roll. The vet said that as she has passed solid inbetween going down stages its a good sign and to give her a couple of bute and make her work to get the gas out at the beginning or walking her she kept trying to drop down but I managed to keep her up. I did this and she is behaving better. no lying down and no lip curling. She is very sedate now but is aware of her sorroundings etc. I have taken away all hay (apart from the bare scraps she mixed in with her shavings) and her water. What else do you recommend I should do? just let her have her space but check on her every hour?

Thanks so much for your advice in advance!

When my bay has had mild colic before, I have just kept walking him around and around for about half hour, until he perked up and just kept checking him every other hour. In more serious cases, I have got the vet out, as soon as he was jabbed within several minutes he was perky as ever, as if nothing happened! I think if she doesn't brighten up soon, may be worth having the vet out! Hope she feels better soon, keep your chin up xx

thanks! I just checked on her again and she is loads perkier! she is finding any scrap of hay in her stable that she can find! short of taking her whole bed out i cant get rid of it all :s i am putting my brother in law on horse thief guard so i can finally get an hour sleep! it puts my mind at rest having someone else recommending to just give her a couple of hours. maybe she is just doing it every time one of us goes away to get attention?! thanks for your advice though xx

what your doing is good, just make sure she is nice and warm, we had an old boy at work go down with impaction colic on friday and he got very cold from the temperature drop. he lives out so has the thickest coat ever. he had to have his droppings pulled out and a tube down his stomach. colic is not nice. hope your mare makes a full recovery.

Lots of good advice already given

Don't know what you feed - but if there is a recurring colic then think about dropping out any form of grains - unconventional advice, but it worked for us - spectacularly well.
