Hi H Was just talking with Ovidius as the boy was down again this morning. The vet has just gone after another anti spaz! and she has taken some bloods. Doesnt think its gastrics just that he is very sensitive. We were just talking about your wonder sauce

The bloods should be back at the end of this week so she said she will see if that shows up anything and if they are clear she might give coligone a try. Do you have anu suppliers in the Leicesterhisre/Northants area or would it be best to mail order?

Thanks Kate, have read you email and replied.... Will be ordering tomorrow once have given OH the news that I am using his credit card!!! (Well he's away and I am sure the horse is objecting to daddy having a holiday!!!)

He does sound like an ideal candidate for this and I know quite a few other horses on our yard that might benefit from it.....

Fiona C's horse has a sugar intolerance (Fiona I'll send u the info leaflet) and we have another horse that is a chronic windsucker as well so will mention it to his owner too.....

ok so he is well wormed, nearly rules that out

hmmm, its rare for colics to be linked but it could be the hayledge/hay, food, or stable management. but by the sounds of it your stable management is fine.

if he colics again, rectal exam, peritonial(belly) tap and poss a refferal to an equine hospital for more investigation. he cant go on colicing! where is you nearest equine hospital?

Oakham...... or Newmarket..... Although my vets is well equipped to cope but if going for big referal, would be one of those....

He also came from a very large horse racing establishment so would ave had the best of everything before.... and have been in contact with them and trainers after that and they never had a problem..... Food not changed, and we go through it rather rapidly having 9 of them!

Did I mention another one on the yard had a slight bout last night?

My old tb used to colic at least 3 times a month. I put him on blue chip feed balancer and that seemed to help. some people fink mixing natural yoghurt into feed helps coz of the bacteria.

Well, touchwood, things seem to have settled down and for the past two days he has been absolutely fine.... Vets rang me this afternoon with the results of his bloods! Absolutely nothing wrong!!! mmmmmm

Maybe he is just one of those sensitive horses!

He's allowed back on proper hard feed tomorrow as long as he has his magic powder in it! And then he's allowed to go for a quiet bimble on Sunday all being well!

Fingers crossed we dont have a repeat episode for at least another few months!

Hannah used to get regular bouts of colic whenever something changed (grass started springing up, haylage changed a little etc etc). I had some tests done on her poo and the conclusion was that her gut was completely unbalanced. I was advised to change her feed to pure Alfalfa (so put her on Dengie Alfa A) and put her on a yeast based supplement. So I did quite a bit of research into the different types of supplements and finally decided to try TopSpec Balancer as that contains a yeast developed by a veterinary college. Since putting her on the TopSpec and Alfa A she can cope with change much better, and touch wood has not had many bouts of colic since. She went out on a rich field the day after Troy was born, and I couldn't catch her so she ended up staying out all day... and was absolutely fine!

I hope this is of some help to you... I hate colic, it is so frightening, especially if you are on your own and you know the signs to look for. Hannah just paws and paws the ground, almost in a trance like state, and I know then she is starting with it.

Becki that sounds exactly like the same person who I had analyse Forrest's droppings for me, they also reccomended the same diet although his bacterial inbalance was so drastic I was not allowed to put him on the feed balancer he had to stay on pure alfa a and was not allowed a single blade of grass.
To anyone who horses regularly suffer from colic- I really do reccomend sending the droppings off for analysis- it does tell you a lot about what is happening in your horse's gut...

I've put him back onto the Baileys Digest Plus, which we gave him last time he colicked.... Luckily I am always in reach of some help when he does it, and must say that friends on the yard have been fab, although I have three boxes, one of my friends has let me put him in hers out the way of the main hustle and bustle.... and he is really lording over the fact that he has all the attention! However the first time he ever had it, I was a nervous quivering wreck in floods of tears..... even ringing OH and telling him to come out of work (which he did!) Now we just dont panic, get him up if he is down, take him for a little wander and call the vet immedaitely! I think I should be the queen of the colic clique!

My 28 year old TB mare used to get colic on a regular basis, always spasmodic (muscle spasms) rather than gassy or flatulent colic (build up of gases in the stomach), so this may or may not help.

Two main things have helped her. The first is the osteopath, strange I know but the place in her back that was the most tender was where the stomach nerves were located. After working on her several times, her colic has reduced to once or twice a year. I also feed her Pink Powder, helps her keep her weight on and does help prevent colic.

Hope this helps.

I was not supposed to use a feed balancer either, but the supplement they recommended was so expensive (£80 a month) and my vets said that I could probably find something else that was just as good without the price tag. I really appreciated their honesty and that is when I started hunting for something suitable.
