one of my horses is prone to getting colic and the wormers can set him off , he is getting done with paramox and is having pain relief before worming to try and prevent him getting unsettled , I am just so worried that this will set him all off again x x

I guess your using Pramox for Tapes? Id try something a little more gentle to be honest. Pramox is quite harsh, I use it but my horses are fine and cope well, If they were sensitive its not something id ever use.

I used Pramox on my mare last year and she got colic about 5 days later. I wouldn't use it again. I have just wormed with Equimax and will use Equest january time. I think it's too strong a wormer with the combined drugs.

I use Equimax for tape worm - have heard too many horry stories with Pramox.

Or if just for tape worm, you can use Equitape.

Good luck!

tbh if you need to use pramox id start giving brewers yeast a week before and for a couple of weeks after to try and keep the bowel settled, actually id keep it on it permanently for a recurrent colicky horse if its were me.x

Pramox contains the same ingredient for encysted worms as Equest, and the same one for tapes as Equitape. But in pramox they are in one wormer, which makes it very powerful and IMO only suitable for healthy horses in their prime with no colic issues.

In your situation I would be insisting on the horse having the two single wormers a couple of weeks apart. I'm sure a vet will back this up if YO is sticky.

In this way horse will have exactly the same worming. But in a safer way for them,

NB actually in the case of tapeworms they could be blood tested instead (the ELISA test) which would mean only the Equest would be needed if tapes blood test was negative (the Equest would still be needed as there's no blood test for the encysted worms it deals with, and they dont show on worm counts) . The fewer wormers the better. it's what I do with my big old chap, I get the blood test done when vet is coming out anyway for teeth and jabs. Kind of an MOT.

My haflinger was a bit sensitive when I used pramox, she couldn't seem to keep weight on after winter and then the wormer made it much worse, she was just mildly colicky (not so much I had to get the vet out but I just kept an eye) and I was really feeding her a lot for a good doer, to no avail. She used to get tucked up too, I have found probiotics made a huge difference. I feed her dengie healthy tummy which contains protexin and I feel much more confident she is comfortable and everything is going ok in there. She is not a colicky horse per se, just a little sensitive and needs gut support. You can get 'quick fix' protexin syringes and sachets especially for worming and other stressful things.

I would use equimax and then worm with equest later on as Ihotse suggested, and use a pre/probiotic or I have used brewers yeast before also.

I lost my mare last year. She was wormed with pramox early evening, I then found her in the morning with acute colic. Lost her a couple of hours later. I still blame myself and would never touch pramox again! Just google Pramox and colic - IMO its too common.

We had a veterinary company who make wormers give a talk recently at Pony Club camp and one of the questions that were asked were for the same problem - the horse tended to colic after worming.

Their response was to find out which of the wormers was causing the colic by using the wormers independently of each other.

As you are wanting to worm for tapeworms then use a wormer that is just for tapeworm - that is one that ONLY contains praziquontal.

Pramox has two ingredients at it may be the combination of the chemicals that are causing the problem.

Worm for the tapes now and in a couple of weeks time worm for all the others with a Mectin based wormer.

Thanks again fellow HHOers from a relative newbie to the forum on the heads up on the increased risk of colic after worming with Pramox. I hadn't heard of the link before.

I read this thread just after I had bought some Pramox, but just before I went out to worm my maxicob, who had an unexplained spasmodic colic 4 weeks ago (needing one vet visit.)

I returned to the shop and bought instead Equitape and Equest, which I will give him a fortnight apart. I mentioned to the SQP why I was doing this and he said that he reckons that 20% to 30% of customers who have used Pramox have told him that they have had a horse colic after using it! He recommended to never use it on a sensitive horse. All news to me!

I will worm all mine separately from now on.

I have a metabolic boy and one who is sensitive to alot of things going into his digestive system.

For this reason i always choose to worm separately,..i've just last week given him his Equitape for tapeworm...and i'll be using Equest in December to treat for encysted worms etc,. I little more expensive on the pocket i know,..but well worth it!!

This is by far the kinder way to go in my opinion for ones that are prone to any upsets by wormers.

Hope that helps.
