Colic claims another - RIP lovely Gem

Again, thank you to everyone for their really kind words. I think we're all in a bit of shock, honestly. Yesterday was just supposed to be a routine check on the field horses, and it was such a tragic outcome.

This is the letter I've drafted to post to the local houses.

"Dear Householder,

Following the death of one of our beloved horses on the 27th June, we felt it necessary to write this letter to alert you all of the dangers of feeding or throwing waste into a field where horses reside.
Gem died as a result of colic, caused by botulism, after ingesting garden waste tipped into our field. She suffered a twisted gut due to a build-up of gas in her stomach. Botulism is caused primarily by fermented fruits and grains, including apples and grass cuttings. Gem was a much loved member of our family, and we are heart broken by her loss.

We appreciate that many of you love to see our horses from your gardens, and we love that they are so cared for by the community. For the sake of our remaining horses, we ask that you do not feed or throw anything into their field, including but not limited to:
• Garden waste – grass cuttings, tree clippings, branches, leaves
• Fruit and vegetables – apples in particular are very high in sugar and ferment very quickly
• Rubbish – there was an incident earlier this month in which a large shard of glass was removed from a hoof

In a separate matter, we have had a report of an unknown male entering our field and inspecting our gate and horses. This has been reported to the police and is being treated as a criminal matter. If you notice any suspicious activity around or in the field, we please ask that you call 999 and report it as an incident in progress.
We can be contacted on 01606 351069 if you have any need to do so. Many of you have been very helpful over the past few days in alerting us when Gem was sick, and for that we are very grateful.

Thank you for your cooperation in this matter,

Yep, send it. You poor thing. The shock is horrible, I still feel sick thinking of seeing Fly on 3 legs...please give yourself some time xxx

Yes, send it ... for sure ... Though it can`t help Gem now, it will help the ones left behind ... but alos in a ripple effect these people will tell others who will tell others and so on. It may save many others in the futre to x

How dreadful, I'm so sorry for your loss of beautiful Gem.

The letter is very good.
I would think and hope that it will be an extremely effective prevention of anyone who reads it from feeding your horses again.

Kind Regards.

Yes send it as it is good letter well done.

I lost my 4 year old to exactly the same thing HGA-12, it's called epiploic foramen. Mine was PTS during surgery. I feel fir anyone losing their horse to colic. I will never get over it.

That is a good letter but it is never wise to publish your contact details on the internet, unless you are advertising a business. Better to blank out your phone number.

I lost my first horse,my dream horse ,to colic . She was 4 and I was 15 . It broke my heart. I cannot understand why people take chances with colic, at least the op can take some small consolation in that she did everything right, called the vet .

Pearlsasinger - Thanks for pointing that out, I'd thought I'd removed everything personal but obviously missed that bit. Once I find the edit tool, which appears to be hiding from me, I shall do that asap.

I'm just waiting on paper and envelopes, and then I'll be printing plenty off and posting them to both the houses immediately next to the field, and the closest couple of roads. I know a lot of people walk their dogs past there and stop to see the horses, and take their children over to say hi, so the more people it reaches the better.

I can assure you that no chances were taken with her. She had the emergency vet out 3 times in as many days, and when she went down yesterday, the vet was called within 5 minutes. Awful signal at the field meant that was the soonest we could call.

Kitei, I am so sorry for your loss-when I had the horses nearer people, them feeding them was one of my biggest concerns. Non horsey folk just don't understand.

You can only edit posts on here within a certain (15mins?) time period. I would pm Admin to ask them to edit out what you want them to.
