COLIC - desperate for help

I lost Bonnie to colic the grey pony in my sig, my mare has had colic too , depending which one you must keep them moving

she co-licked the first time we walked her lunged her ,pain killers and then the vet left. 1 hr later she co-licked again vet came back did another rectal , said POTTERS BAR NOW.
up we went with horsebox trying to die at 1am in morning. stayed there a week.

long story

6 weeks later out in paddock came in 5 she was ok 8.30-9pm colicking vet came out pain killers rectal she seemed better, i said please stay as last time vet left she co-licked again, sure enough she did and again things changed in rectal, walked her round till 2-30am, back to stable vet said cant take her to potters bar she will die on the table. so we put my beloved pony to sleep.

Turns out in post Morten ALL HORSES have a hole in their gut. Some its bigger than it should be and intestines go through and get cut off. The first time the transport up their must have got it out, this time it got cut off blood started going toxic.

Oh dear I am so sorry for your loss. I could tell the state you were in from your post the other night. I had hoped that not hearing meant a happy ending.

To those who feel they have to have a go. Have some sympathy, we might not agree entirely with the way the OP handled this but she did call the vet, treat the horse and make the right decision in the end.

And she was on her own, I have always been lucky enough to have someone with me when in these positions, either family or other people from the yard. I dont know how badly I personally would have fallen apart without that.

RIP girl, such a sad way to go.

Unfortunately I am not an author, only a horse lover (especially my horse), I asked people for help - not abuse. My grammar may not have come across brillian as I cannot write my entire situ down in speed and was purely desperate for help and advice from other horse people with knowledge that I could feed from - my horse was certainly not abandoned in a field - the vet took bloods, she tested fine for her liver, stomach, she had rectal examination, her heart rate was 84, her temperature high, it was not really an option that she could even be sedated as would not get through that, let alone an operation. Most on here were fantastic, alas there is usually one.

sorry to hear about your poor horse, I have been there twice now, 2 in my sig have gone now :(

A lot of people think its their job to correct spelling mistakes etc , my grammar is poor as i have a reading and writing disability ,my typing is cr4p. Still they correct me . That's not important what is is you know you loved your mare you know the truth , there will always be some disbelievers.

remember the good times, get a nice portrait done in honour of her.http://www.petportraits.freeserve.co.uk/.

I got a tattoo done of mine so she will be with me 4 ever.
thinking of you at this time:( .xx

JETSCaribbeanMalibu,
I was so sorry to hear this outcome when I logged on today. I am sorry that I did not see your post earlier. You have my heartfelt sympathies and I know that you feel like you have a huge horse shaped hole in your heart but please fill it with your memories and the love she gave you.
I am sorry that I could not offer you more help on the first night, I could hardly sleep thinking about your situation so it is hard to imagine how bad it was for you. Be comforted by the knowledge that you did what you knew was right for her and she is no longer in pain, I know it's hard to think that now but you will, in time.
Take Care, Swanny.

im actually welling up reading this - I love my horse to bits and as a novice owner i too would have trusted and believed in my vet, its so easy to panic in bad situations and yes you do rely on proffessionals- im so so truly sorry for your loss , heartbreaking x

Dear OP, sorry you have had the misfortune of your horse being PTS and negative comments on here whilst you were going through this truamatic experience, reading such comments after her being PTS must have been terrible for you.

I took could sense your stress in your post's and it's unfortunate that not all of us here could. Maybe these poster's are bitter or unsatisfied in their own lives to think in such a negative manner, poor people.

Time is a great healer, trust me, and there really are plenty of 'nice' and decent folk on here who are genuinely wanting to offer help and opinions etc.

I can't even say 'maybe they misunderstood', as there was nothing to misunderstand in your posts.

Hugs xxx

Hi again, sorry forgot to say, try not to worry, there is/was no need to justify yourself to anyone and certainly not to anyone on here.

Besides, Shil's would be straight on their backs, we are surposed to be one big family.!

Oh dear, I was hoping that no news was good news :(

I am very sorry for your loss, I have lost one suddenly to colic and I know how you feel, it leaves a massive hole in your heart.

Sorry for the loss of your horse, but I am with Glenruby on this one and I can't understand why the OP has reported her. I cannot believe that the vet did not have the horse sent straight to the hospital, knowing that what was going in was not coming out. That to me says blockage straight away. Glenruby probably has more experience in this type of event than anyone else on the thread, so to report her for telling the honest truth is a bit out of order.

I was so sorry to read of the loss of your horse, there is little that can be said to console or comfort you at this time but in time you really will be able to remember the happy times, promise.

Thank you Mearas, not sleeping at the moment, pain and emptiness is awful. I really want to write about her life, she was so special and sweet. Do you know if I can do this in my profile? It will give me something to focus on and help my strength, and lack of sleeping.

Have had my mare for 15 years (she is 17). Never experienced this, very difficult to pin-point the prob, she is not passing faeces, she has had two vet visits, both with strong pain killing injections - i have lunged her, but am living on borrowed time, as vet will not visit and inject anymore

hiya how awful for you!! i had a horse that had a colic op last year he came thru but i swore i would never put a horse thru it again especially an older one i know exactley how you are feeling!¬! as a result the horse in question now has a heart problem but he did have youth on his side!! the op cost 3 grand in total and almost gave me grey hairs!! it was awful to see him in the state he was in and an older horse may not have as much fight !! however if money is no object its certainly worth a go!! good luck xx

Glenruby I was also shocked that horse was left in field ,as I think showed at the time when a few of us were "talking" to the op.However her vet had been treating the horse and very often they do not raise the possibility of pts.
I assisted a neighbour with a very poorly colicking pony and I had to say pts as the vet skirted round not wishing to upset her.
Not all vets can handle traumatised owners as easily as they can the horse.

I agree. Being an owner I would always ask the vet if he/she thought that my horses injury/illness warranted being PTS much as I would dread the answer. Then I would be guided by the vets. I have asked before now 'what would you do if it were your horse' and then made my decision accordingly.
