My 7 year old mare had colic surgery around 8 weeks ago now, all has been going really well until today. I had just about stopped worrying about her all the time and we were no longer checking her in the night, just last thing usually around midnight.

This morning i fed her and mucked out grazed her for 20 mins as normal, i thought she was a little quiet but then she had a bit of a fit bcause of the wind and was being cheeky so i thought she was just a little upset becuase my mum and the farmer had put her to bed last night, both of whom she loves as i was away for the evening.

At lunchtime i went to take her for her 20min walk and graze and she was curling up her top lip (she always does this if she has colic) and had bulgy guts, i obviously completley panicked and called the vets and walked her around a little. After 1/2 hour vet arrived and she was loads better but he gave her buscapan and bute. Blood test results were pretty normal.

So now we are back to sqaure one worrying about her like mad. The only factor that has happened in both times is i have left her little longer than normal or been up a little later than normal (note i am talking about leaving someone else to check her if i have left her at 6pm and getting there at 7am not 6am!) Could it be she gets anxious if i am not there and she got anxious last night and i was little later this morning?

This is a private yard so no comings and goings to upset her.
We do have a very strong bond as she is one high maintenance horse so we spend a lot of time together, could it be she gets anxious if i am not there even though her routine is identical if my mum grazes her????

Does anyone have a horse that has had colic surgery?

Thank you sorry its so long!

i had a horse that had colic surgery and can understand youre anxiety and even years later i am anxious about anything that could cause a bout of colic. is your horse quite stressy in that even slight changes can upset her or is she laid back. even when you do things by the book they sometimes are a bit off colour just like us. i think weather changes can cause colic in some horses and it has been very windy.the main thing is you noticed quickly and did the right thing.good luck .

My mare had colic surgery nearly 3 years ago now & I totally understand how you feel. I still now worry about changes I make to and for her i.e. grazing changes, riding changes & I even walk her for 15 mins when we come back from a trip in the trailer if she isn’t going into the field & is being stabled for the night (I am still beating myself up that things I did the day before she had colic contributed towards it!). She did have two more bouts of colic after her surgery but none were major but, like you, I panicked! They said that you could expect a few bouts after the surgery – you probably already know this so sorry for repeating it!! By the way, my mare is fighting fit & going strong so all I can say I please don’t worry too much, stick to what you are doing & the routine you have & you will find that you relax about the whole situation in time.
