Can anybody help me? I took my daughter out on her pony today, he is a little welsh sec a, he is a very greedy pony and usually dragging me whilst I lead into the bushes to grap a mouthfull of foliage. Anyway today he kept pulling me onto the grass verges, and just standing there, sort of looking like he wanted a wee, but just standing not wanting to eat just standing there. He done this the whole ride, then when he found a big enough peice of grass he got down and rolled with her on, and scared my daughter to death, she is only 4. He normally only has an hour a day on the grass, today he had 3 hrs, which makes me think it could be mild colic, but I dont understand the not wanting to stand on the concrete. He did also trash his bed when he stayed in his stable pm, which he never does. His feet were not hot and although he is fat, he isn't obese and does get ridden a lot by another girl at our yard. He has never had laminitis before. Any ideas what could have caused him to act this way?

It sounds like colic to me. If I were you I'd check him again tonight (or get somone else to if you can't) & if he isn't right get the vet because both colic & laminitis can need urgent treatment. I'm not trying to scare you but at the same time these aren't illnesses to be taen lightly.

Don't know; but it doesn't sound like laminitis. He could just have had a touch of colic or a chill. Keep an eye on him.

Sounds like colic. Watch him for 20 mins and check the symptoms, i.e. rolling, kicking at belly, looking around at belly, sweating etc. If it gets worse in 20 mins, call the vet.

Feeling heat in the hooves doesnt necessarily mean laminitis. He was being ridden at the time. Check his digital pulse after rest. If you cant find the pulse, ask someone else or the vet to check it (important).

Please keep us posted x

Thanks for your advise. As we are a big yard I got someone to keep an eye on him this afternoon, and I went out to see him at 7ish and apart from trashing his bed he was fine, asking me to fill his haynet again. My friend checked his feet and said they wern't hot. But I have been advised to keep him off the grass for a day or two. Maybe I should stick to his one hour per day again, he does tend to gorge himself.
Another thing was in the field this morning he was led down eating, which would indicate laminitis. Oh I dont know, I will have to just watch him. I have had horses most of my life but never encountered Colic or Laminitis

Sounds more like a mild dose of colic than laminitis...... was he also yawning a lot? this can be another sign of it...... If things have settled, I would give him hay all tomorrow as well as a bran mash to flush anything through..... Keep us updated!

I will just keep him in tomorrow, poor chap, he wont be a happy bunny. I will keep you all informed. Thanks for all the advise.
