Hi. Our horse has recently started to be agitated when we touch his tummy (behind the girth), his chest (to do up rug) and inside at the top of his hind legs. He's fine to tack up and do up girth - doesn't mind that at all - fine to pick up feet etc. Happy riding - He's sound, eating well etc. But there is definitely something wrong - it's like he's ticklish but agitated by it - any ideas welcome! Thanks

Have you changed his feed lately?

Have you only recently started to rug? It sounds like a rug issue from the touch points you mention.

I would second this, I’ve recently started using a different brands rug for my mare and she became quite nasty whenever I went to put it on. Completely stopped when I changed back to her old one!

If it’s within your budget to scope and potentially treat ulcers then I would definitely get this checked too, said mare was a bit reactive to her rug before and it was ulcers. Was clear this time though!

I have just remembered, from a long time back, reading about a horse that was being shocked by the static build-up in a nylon lined rug, and refused to have the rug on. Worth checking?
