colic sad !!

my lovely througahbred had colic late sunday night and nearly lost him, his caecum was distended and not responding to meds given, he was monitored closley for 24 hours and if deteritoed was going to be pts as is a resucue horse and 16 years old and do not want to put through surgery, he is doing ok, vets confident he will make a recovery but is guarded if an impaction , we are awaiting bloods results, his cecum is still distened slightly but no colic for a day now, bright inself and eating well

Thinking of you, Lost my mare last year to colic due to her not showing any signs of pain what so ever, too tough for her own boots. Praying for you boy.

OMG this is my story repeating itself

Bonnie got colic 6 day after i bought her
her intestines went through the gut wall rush off to potters bar , still within 2 weeks before insurance kicked in. I was told she needed surgery so no cover

Next day better they think the transport up there got intestines out. next few weeks monitored her kept a muzzle on, gradually taking off hr earlier. Everything fine till i took the electric fence down that cut her field in half, thus she had access to longer grass.


That night checked her 7 ok 8.30pm showing signs of colic , called vet thinks ok gave her painkiller and vet was going to go , I said please stay a bit as she co licked again after half hr of vet going, He did , just as well as she co-licked again , things changed intestine extended got worse and worse 2.30am I had to put my gorgeous 5 year old pony down.

I kick my self thinking if only I left her muzzle on.


Turns out ALL horses have a hole in the gut hers was bigger than normal hence intestine went through then got cut of...

Please please ask vet if a muzzle would help when he is grazing so less chance for impaction I would hate it if this should happen again to someone else.
