My little mate had colic surgery last night after getting strangulating lipoma she needed 1.5 metres of her small intestine removed bit so far (i know its v early days) she's recovering well. I just wanted to know what I can do when she's home. She'll need box rest for 8 weeks etc but feeding wise? Any advice greatly appreciated :)

I can't give you any advice except to ask the vet, but wanted to wish both her and you well and that she has a good recovery.

My pony was fed on high Fibre Cubes and bran made into a mash after his surgery. His op was last May and I still feed him a small amount of high Fibre Cubes and a balancer, always damp. I was also told soft hay is best. I cut grass for him 4 times a day while he was on box rest. I hope your horse is ok today.

I'm sorry to hear about your girl. My big horse had surgery 5 weeks ago and had 8 feet of small intestine removed. He was given soaked fibre nuts to start him back onto feed but when he came home he refused to eat them wet so I had to feed them dry. He coped fine although I was paranoid as soaked is obviously better! He now gets fibre nuts with a handful of outshine and a handful of just grass slightly dampened 4 times a day and adlib hay. He also gets to graze inhand every day. It's a long slow road that is emotionally draining but it has been worth it to still have my horse.

He was in for 7 days. Luckily he didn't really have any problems but his temp went up the night before he was due home so they kept him an extra day. We still don't know why it happened ad it was normal on the next check. Four weeks after his surgery he took a mild bout of colic but thankfully some buscopan sorted him out. I found I just have to take each day as it comes or I'm a nervous wreck thinking what may or may not happen. The biggest thing to watch for is the wound becoming infected. Catching it quick makes a difference. My guy is back to his normal self again. I know the risk of colic for him now is higher but I'm so glad I gave him the chance.
