My girl went in for it and it was so hard, but i said do it i don't want to lose her yet and the vets, Chine house in Sileby, Leicestershire. Said there is a very good chance for her and with what we can and know now she stands a good chance. This was nov last year. She had Epiploic Foramen Entrapment nothing was taken away all was still pink, because the girls at yard got her there within the hour. I thank them for her being here today. She is back to her old self and touch wood not had a problem with her. I know she is no longer insured for coilc. So i would say yes i would take on a horse who had the op.
I would have to say no. My mare had colic end of last year and it was awful. Luckily she didn't have to have op but was very close to, turned out she had severe tape worm (even though she had been wormed regularly) took 5 wormers to get them all out. Saying that, I wouldn't buy a horse knowing it had problems anyway (colic, navicular etc) ...I'm pretty scarred by previous experiences with my mare who was sadly put to sleep (severe problems...lots of them), didn't know any of her problems when I bought her and I understand If I bought another with a clean bill of health anything could happen, but I'd prefer to start a fresh without the worry of that problem lurking.
My friend is going through this exact dilemma atm.
She bought a very well bred foal four years ago for a lot of money, kept him entired. His bloodlines are dressage, however once broken it seemed he wouldn't make GP and in turn, he was graded for jumping as he jumps the earth! He has been on a pro SJing yard for the past year and was doing great. However in April he came down with colic, had to have surgery and intestine removed and unfortunatelty post surgery, some intestine dropped down into one of his testicales and he had to have them both off.
SO, now she is left with a still very beautiful, very talented horse, however no longer a stallion. Her plan always was to sell him and now she is going to have massive trouble as noone is going to be able to insure him for colic. I really feel for her as I know how excited she was about this horse and how much money she has poured into him etc.
In response to Q- Not sure, it would depend how long ago the colic surgery was and how much it was out doing etc.
