Colic Surgery (Urgent!)

Thank you so much for all your replies:)

The decision has been taken out of my hands. Its my OHs wee 3 year old. He has nursed her for almost 72 hours, day and night and is not letting anything get in the way of giving the wee mare a chance. He is currently on his way down to the Dick Vet in Edinburgh.

Keeping everything crossed that she makes it.

I've just found this thread and only got this far into it before posting, I wouldn't have been any good in advice though as absolutely no experience on colic surgeries, but I just wanted to say I have everything crossed for you, oh and his wee girl. Xx

Fingers crossed everything goes well for your girl. My boy recently had two nights in, a drip for 24 hours, a tap, an ultrasound and various other exams and drugs and my bill was just under £1500 including two out of hours call outs. I was told to budget at around £6k to include straight forward surgery and aftercare. Luckily we didn't have to go that far, but as others have said the prices go up when they're insured as my lad is.

Please keep us posted x

Keeping everything crossed for you.
Been there twice with my HOL - 6 years ago had 3m small intestine and ileum removed - due to lipoma strangling intestine (aged 19) Cost £6k. Had same thing again 2 months ago, (aged 25) lipoma had grown back, but no intestine removed this time. We were quoted £5k, but he was only up to about £2.5k when he was due to come home as it had gone so well. Bizarrely, suddenly got massive joint infection in hock - 2 further gen anaesthetics, arthoscopy, flushes etc etc - more life threatening than the colic surgery. Thankfully still with us, but the 4 day stay, £2.5k bill morphed into 3 weeks and £10k. Obviously at 25, not insured, but hospital aware of that and billed accordingly!
Don't begrudge a penny of the cost, just glad we were able the give the tough old boy every chance and I take each extra day with him as a bonus.

Thank you so much to everyone for all the info and best wishes.:)

Its actually looking quite promising. After the initial examination the Vets seemed quite confident that they could sort out the impaction without surgery. OH fell asleep in the car park before his long drive home and the Vet must have realised he was still there two hours later and came out to tell him Lottie had passed poo:) Great news!!

Currently waiting on an update this morning but a bit more hopeful today:)

Fantastic news this has brightened my already grey dull day !

She has finally arrived home tonight after two days in the Dick Vet. The Vets are happy they have cleared the impaction and she is back eating, drinking and pooing as normal. Looking a wee bit clapped in but otherwise in good health. The relief is immense:) Not had the bill yet but have been informed it wont be over £900, so all is good :)

Good outcome ID, the same as when my girl, when my mare was in they flooded her with iv fluid and painkillers did some manual removals until she started to pass the blockage herself, you describe the " clapped in look " perfectly.
Touch wood she's been fine since then.
