Afternoon all!

I am a 2nd year vet student at RVC and for my research project I've decided to do research on the best animal, the horse! I'm looking into the risk factors associated with colic and need as much data as possible to give me the best results. If you could possibly take time out to complete this survey (even if your horse has never had colic!) it would be very much appreciated.

Please fill out one survey per horse, and share as much as you can to get the best results!

Thank you! If you have any problems, or would prefer to complete the survey in a word document format please let me know!

Thank you for the responses so far!

Andalucian, it is one horse per survey to make it easier when inputting data into the software I need to. If you could fill out the survey multiple times (apologises, not ideal I know!) then that would be brilliant :)

Just done one :) I could do the other four, but it may take rather long....

Thank you! Sorry about the length, I tried to keep it as short as possible so it wasn't an inconvenience. Feel free to do it whenever you'd got some spare time, as much data as possible would be amazing!

Done. I have only ever had 1 with proper colic.

I could fill one in with for the racehorses too as a complete flip side to my lad.

Thanks, all kinds of horses accepted, it would be great to see if there is a prevalence difference between the types of activity they undertake!

The racehorse one I just put through was based on a wee lad that colicked last year. He hadn't been given his 9pm feed the night before, had been fed as usual at 7.30am & 1pm, worked as normal and the colicked about 2pm. We have had a few horses over the years do this when someone has forgotten to feed at 9pm.

do you not wait an hour after feeding before riding? I have always given them time to digest before riding?

My mare had never had colic until I had to separate her from her best friend and move yards to a bigger busier yard. I'm 99% sure that her issue was caused by being unsettled rather than activity as her diet, routine and exercise were prety much unchanged. However she went from a turnout with her bestie to group turnout wher she moved from horse to horse trying to make a bond. She lost condition which I can pretty much put down to being unhappy through displacement - bit like the new kid starting at school mid year.

I don't own the mare in question anymore but gave the details correctly to when I did. She had a 360 degree colon torsion which I thought may be useful for your survey.

Thank you all so much for your responses! Some really interesting cases coming through as well which will be great to talk about and analyse in my report.

Can't wait to analyse some of this data, please keep it coming (even if the horse hasn't had colic, it provides a great comparison!)

Yes yes! They have at least an hour and a half after food before working! Don't panic! I suppose it doesn't make it clear in that post. We feed at 7.30am and then lots go out at 9.30am, 11am and 12pm. Then fed at 1pm and it's usually around 2pm that they show signs of colic.
