I have six year old Trakehner mare, (with a foal at foot), who went down with what appeared to be Spasmodic colic last Saturday evening. The vet came Sunday morning (no one would come out Saturday evening, as we are in France). She was treated with camagine (like Buscopan), and Sunday afternoon appeared to have improved greatly, (the vet did not do a rectal, or stomach tube her, with Liquid paraffin). All through she has been eating, dunging, and urinating normally. She has been very quiet all week, and occassionally has shown very mild colic like symptoms which have passed (on one occassion we had to give her Camagine again, and she has reacted quiet markedly to the injection site on her chest. We decided that although we have a regular worm porgramme we should cover any eventuallities and she has been wormed with Equitape and Equest, since Saturday, and turned out in a different field, in case she may have eaten something. On Wedneday I found her in the field totally tucked up, and unwilling to walk (just planted). We called the vet who arrived two hours later (aren't they just great). He did a rectal said he had no idea, but would take a dung sample for analysis, and went to leave without offering her any pain relief, which was rectified when I produced my bottle of camagine (unbelievably he didn't have anything with him). Now she does appear to be holding her own, is eating, dunging, quite bright in herself but she still seems unable to walk normally, just a little unsteady. Has anyone else had anything like this? Oops forgot to say she has had blood tests done, on the advice of my old vet in the UK, slightly lower blood protein, and signs of an inflammatory process. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hooray, have hopefully got it sorted. It seems to be the reaction in her chest from the injection site, which is now even more swollen, so we gave her some bute last night, and this morning, and she is moving almost normally, what a relief.

Thanks Highlandponylass for your post (her foal is actually due for weaning, but good thought).

Hi Louismacshoe.

I am so glad it has settled and your mare is improving. Its good news. Who would have thought that a reaction to an injection could cause such a reaction!
