I got down the yard at 3pm this afternoon and noticed that indi wasnt himself, i took his rug off and his belly was swollen and his breathing rapid so contacted the vet.

Vet turned up and diagnosed spasmodic colic and decided to rectally examin him, he found his poo to be very hard and clay like and then found a huge mass by his pelvic bones which he thought was a distended bladder. He then checked his temp and heart rate and both were way higher than they should be.

He gave indi some antibiotics, painkillers and anti inflamatorys, took some blood and rushed them to the lab promising to be back within 40 mins, at this point he did warn me that we may be requiring transport to liverpool.

40 mins passed and he was back, the bloods seemed ok and while the vet had been gone indi had managed to do a wee.

The vet re-examined him again and the bladder had returned to normal and the poo seemed looser than before, also his heart rate and temp had begun to come down to normal. The vet then stuck a 3 mtr long tube up indis nose in to his stomach and put water up it to see if there was a blockage and nothing apparent seemed to show up.

The vet then decided to leave it there as he didnt feel it was necessary to do the abdominal injection in to the gut as there was risks involved.

Anyway that was at 8 oclock last night.

I have just been down at 3am to check on him and he seems ok although still hasnt pooed etc.

Im absolutely heart broken and dont know what more i can do to help him, i have had horses with colic before but never like this, they cleared it with a matter of hours.

Poor you and poor Indi you must be worn out.
If he still hasnt pooed I would get the vet again.
I hate it when they are in pain and you can't help them.
Hope he is better soon.

Sorry to hear your post. I wouldn't get too hung up about the fact your horse has not poohed. If there is not much going into him in the way of fibre then there will not be much coming out. Presumably the vet said to either starve him for a time or give him a very small amount of soaked hay. Either way this won't produce much poo. If you are concerned call your vet again and maybe check his stats i.e temperature/respiration/attitude/attempting to eat, etc before you ring in order to give the vet an indication of how your horse is. Try not to worry hon. My horse has had loads of colics including a slight impaction, mostly spasmodic gassy colics though.

Good luck hon.

Aww, this happened to me some weeks ago, Baby Belle decided to jump her fence to where the grass was greener!

Like you transport to Liverpool was on standby, it was just so horrible to see, i felt so helpless, my vet did a brillant job of not only keeping me together but also managed to make Belle better without any surgical intervention.

Just want to send you a BIG HUG, hope Indi gets better soon, sending lots of get well vibes your way
