I got down the yard at 3pm this afternoon and noticed that indi wasnt himself, i took his rug off and his belly was swollen and his breathing rapid so contacted the vet.
Vet turned up and diagnosed spasmodic colic and decided to rectally examin him, he found his poo to be very hard and clay like and then found a huge mass by his pelvic bones which he thought was a distended bladder. He then checked his temp and heart rate and both were way higher than they should be.
He gave indi some antibiotics, painkillers and anti inflamatorys, took some blood and rushed them to the lab promising to be back within 40 mins, at this point he did warn me that we may be requiring transport to liverpool.
40 mins passed and he was back, the bloods seemed ok and while the vet had been gone indi had managed to do a wee.
The vet re-examined him again and the bladder had returned to normal and the poo seemed looser than before, also his heart rate and temp had begun to come down to normal. The vet then stuck a 3 mtr long tube up indis nose in to his stomach and put water up it to see if there was a blockage and nothing apparent seemed to show up.
The vet then decided to leave it there as he didnt feel it was necessary to do the abdominal injection in to the gut as there was risks involved.
Anyway that was at 8 oclock last night.
I have just been down at 3am to check on him and he seems ok although still hasnt pooed etc.
Im absolutely heart broken and dont know what more i can do to help him, i have had horses with colic before but never like this, they cleared it with a matter of hours.
