my horse is showing really strange signs, possibly colicy? - not very interested in her tea (but did ave a tiny nibble at her hay), curling upper lip, sore belly if i touch it (she usually loves a scratch!), every now and then she has a load of spit come from her mouth and shes also really struggling to wee (keeps going through the position, really try for a few moments then walk around and try again)

but shes not trying to roll or get down, shes still alert, bright eyed and shiny coat. routine hasnt been changed and feed isnt changed. walked her around for 30 min and then she had a small, hard, dark brown poo just before i left

she has also stopped lactating (my choice, not natural) in the past 2 months after shes been with her yearling, and her bags are very baggy but look a bit swollen recently.

going back in an hour too check her but i would like your opinions before i have a big vet bill, thank you!

If it is colic, the general rule is that the faster you treat it, the smaller the bill. To me, some of the symptoms (spit, wee) don't match my understanding of colic. Maybe a problem with her teats (an infection??). In any case, if it was my horse, I would call a vet out now. I don't like vet bills either, but with all these various symptoms I would be concerned at this point and figure that it is better to pay a moderate bill unneccessarily than to risk a really major problem by waiting longer.

hi it doesnt sound like colic but could be an infection but i would get her checked by the vet if you are not happy with her. It sounds like she is in some discomfort and you knew she is not her self the sooner it is seen it might mean a simple jag or a course to cure it hope she is back at her self in no time not nice when they are off colour

Re her udder, if it is swollen she probably has mastitis. This needs to be treated fast - left untreated it can sometimes became life threatening. I'd also get the vet out for a possible colic too. Not eating her tea or hay, curling her lip, sore belly, passing tiny hard poos are all signs of clic. The straining to pee is more likely to be straining to pass droppings. She needs veterinary help and she needs it fast.

Sounds like she could be colicky to me!! The straining to wee could be due to abdo. pain, unusual pressure on the bladder etc. Good that she's done a poo, but ideally try and work out when she last seemed 'normal', when she last ate properly, and how long she has seemed uncomfortable. Worth ringing the Vet, don't think I would leave it overnight, best of luck, hope it's something minor and she's ok.

As someone who's spent the best part of the day with the YO and vet as my horse was colicking I echo the advice of getting the vet.

My mare was eating/drinking/weeing/pooing fine this morning and just after lunch I had a phonecall from my YO telling me that she was colicking. Had it not been the quick action from her and the vet I think the outcome could have been totally different.

I wouldn't risk waiting to see

sorry for late update - went back about 20 mins after this post and stayed with her for half an hour to see how she is, she'd had a good bit of hay, had another poo in her bed, wasnt curling her lip but was still quite phlegmy, so called vet for advice whos first thought was that she'd eaten a poisonous plant (but the field is almost bare, except for trees with a bit of ivy on) , he highly doubted colic because she'd pooed and wasnt showing the signs anymore. but as she had improved we thought we would wait until morning to get the vet out. stayed another 30 min. in which time she'd had a big wee, thankfully.
in the morning she was almost totally fine, all hay had been eaten, lots of poos, quite a bit of wet straw and hardly any more phlegm! gave her a bran mash for breakfast and phoned vet again, he said its possible it could have been something like licking a frog or where frogs/toads have been! he said keep an eye on her and if she deteriorates again he'll come straight out. very strange, but she is fine now

Glad your girl is on the mend.

I thought ivy was poisonous. Could she have eaten some of it from the tree?

My dogs always froth at the mouth if they manage to find a toad!
