Hi brought a new horse last week and was to collect it but it had colic. The vet came and and confirmed impaction colic. It was tubed for five days with liquid parafin etc. The blockage cleared and was having the occasional normal poo. It is still suffering with very mild colic on and off. She goes out to grass and all vital signs are normal. Could this be the result of all the parafin she has had (nearly 2 gallons of it) and how long should this carry on for. I need help. Has anyone had the same situation:confused:

What does the vet say? I would be concerned that she was only having "the occasional poo". Sounds as if she is not quite out of the woods yet. Mine have always recovered quite quickly but maybe I have just been lucky. Maybe it is time to get the vet back out.

Hi there the vet is not really helping now. Just says carry on with what we are doing. They didnt hold out much hope on wednesday night but we turned her out and she started to get the guts moving. I am just at my wits end as she is not insured and I just wondered whether it was all the parafin that was causing her to have this mild pain. She is not rolling or anything like that just very quiet and laying down a lot. Eating and drinking normally and vital signs are normal.

To me it sounds as if she is still a bit obstructed if she is not pooing properly but I could be way off mark. If your vet is not giving you a feeling of confidence you could try a second opinion? I would not have thought the parafin would be causing the pain at all as it helps them poo. There are some vets that come on here that might be able to reassure you a bit but I think I would be asking a lot of questions if I was not happy with her progress. Sometimes you need to ask as they assume you know more than you do. What is obvious to them is not always obvious to the client. I hope she continues to improve for you.

If she is still quiet and lying down a lot I would suspect that she is still uncomfortable. Liquid paraffin, as far as I'm aware, doesn't cause side effects of prolonged pain- all it is really doing is trying to grease the impaction through. If she's not totally normal by tomorrow, I would call your vet (or another if you are not happy) to check her over again. It sounds like she had quite an impaction if she needed tubing for 5 days, it may be that everything is a bit bruised and stretched and is taking time to recover, but it's probably better to be safe than sorry. Hope she's OK, let us know.

Thank you ever so much. i am hoping you are right with the bruising. I want her to be 100% before i commit to bringing her home as dont want this to happen with me. She is such a lovely horse. I am hoping there not something more sinister going on.

If the current vet isn't being very helpful & it's been going on this long then I'd be getting a second opinion now. She really doesn't sound as though she's right yet & that's a long time for a colic to be grumbling on.

Well i have spoken to the vet and also had another vet come. We are to carry on with the liquid parafin and start giving her bute. They are saying that she is still in pain due to the fact everything is bruised and sore and will be like this for the next couple of weeks or so. I am a lot happier now.;)

Glad to hear that everything is under control:)
It is so nice when you can get some reassurance from the vet:)
I hope she continues to pick up for you.
